Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. Ensure all gasket surfaces are clean. Clean carbon from combustion chambers and tops of pistons. Install new gasket with the word TOP upward. Ensure all holes are aligned.
    CAUTION: Do not apply sealing compound on the cylinder head and the block gasket surfaces. Do not allow sealing compound to enter the cylinder bore.
  2. Install cylinder head. On 4.0L, apply Loctite 592 sealing compound or equivalent to threads of cylinder head bolt No. 11 prior to installation. Install head bolts. Tighten bolts to specification and in proper sequence. See Fig 1.
    CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts should be reused only once. Replace head bolts if they were used before or if they have a paint dab on top of bolt.
  3. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Refill cooling system.
NOTE: Remove coolant temperature sensor switch, located in intake manifold, to bleed air from system while filling.
