Engine Identification

NOTE: For engine repair procedures not covered in this article, see ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES - GENERAL INFORMATION article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.

The 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is located at upper left side of dash. It is visible from outside vehicle through windshield. The VIN can also be found on metal plate affixed to the left door or the left side radiator support. The fourth character identifies engine size and the tenth character (H) identifies the model year.

Engine identification code is stamped on a machined surface on distributor side of cylinder block, between No. 2 and No. 3 cylinders. The letter portion of the code identifies engine displacement, carburetor type and compression ratio. In addition, engines built for sale in Georgia and Tennessee have a non-repeating number stamped on right side of engine above build date code.
