Draining & Refilling

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1983 Jeep Wagoneer, 1983 Jeep Scrambler, 1983 Jeep Pickup, 1983 Jeep Cherokee, and 1983 Jeep CJ7. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Loosen oil pan bolts, tap pan to break loose allowing fluid to drain. Remove oil pan bolts, and remove oil pan. Install new filter on bottom of valve body and tighten retaining screws. Install new "O" ring on fluid pickup pipe (if needed). Clean oil pan and install with new gasket.
  2. Pour 5 quarts of transmission fluid through filler tube. Start engine and allow to idle for at least 2 minutes. Ensure engine is at curb idle, and vehicle is on a level surface. With parking brake applied, move shift selector lever through all positions, ending in "NEUTRAL".
  3. Add sufficient fluid to bring level to the "ADD ONE PINT" mark. Recheck fluid level after transmission has reached normal operating temperature.
  4. Level should then be between the "FULL" marks and the "ADD ONE PINT" marks on dipstick. Reseat dipstick fully.
