Lock-Up Torque Converter Trouble Shooting - AMC & Jeep

TORQUE CONVERTER - NO LOCK-UP CHART (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty oil pump Replace oil pump
Sticking governor valve Repair or replace as required
Valve body malfunction Stuck switch valve Stuck lock-up valve Stuck fail-safe valve Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
Failed locking clutch Replace torque converter
Leaking turbine hub seal Replace torque converter
Faulty input shaft or seal ring Repair or replace as required
TORQUE CONVERTER - WILL NOT UNLOCK CHART (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Sticking governor valve Repair or replace as required
Valve body malfunction Stuck switch valve Stuck lock-up valve Stuck fail-safe valve Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
CONVERTER - STAYS LOCKED UP AT TOO LOW A SPEED IN DIRECT (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Sticking governor valve Repair or replace as required
Valve body malfunction Stuck switch valve Stuck lock-up valve Stuck fail-safe valve Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
TORQUE CONVERTER - LOCKS UP OR DRAGS IN LOW OR SECOND (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty oil pump Replace oil pump
Valve body malfunction Stuck switch valve Stuck fail-safe valve Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
TORQUE CONVERTER - SLUGGISH OR STALLS IN REVERSE (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty oil pump Replace oil pump
Plugged cooler, cooler lines or fittings Flush or replace cooler and flush lines and fittings
Valve body malfunction Stuck switch valve Faulty input shaft or seal ring Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
CONVERTER - LOUD CHATTER DURING LOCK-UP ENGAGEMENT (COLD) (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty torque converter Replace torque converter
Failed locking clutch Replace torque converter
Leaking turbine hub seal Replace torque converter
CONVERTER - VIBRATION OR SHUDDER AT LOCK-UP ENGAGEMENT (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty oil pump Repair or replace oil pump
Valve body malfunction Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
Faulty torque converter Replace torque converter
Engine performance Diagnose and tune engine
TORQUE CONVERTER - VIBRATION AFTER LOCK-UP ENGAGEMENT (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty torque converter Replace torque converter
Exhaust system vibration Align exhaust system
Engine performance Diagnose and tune engine
Throttle linkage misadjusted Check and adjust throttle linkage
TORQUE CONVERTER - VIBRATION WHEN "REVVED" IN NEUTRAL (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Torque converter out of balance Replace torque converter
CONVERTER - OVERHEATS: OIL BLOWS FROM DIPSTICK/PUMP SEAL (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Plugged cooler, cooler lines or fittings Flush or replace cooler and flush lines and fittings
Stuck switch valve Repair switch valve in valve body or replace valve body
TORQUE CONVERTER - SHUDDER AFTER LOCK-UP ENGAGEMENT (AMC & JEEP)

Possible Cause Correction
Faulty oil pump Repair or replace oil pump
Plugged cooler, cooler lines or fittings Flush or replace cooler and flush lines and fittings
Valve body malfunction Repair or replace valve body or its internal components as required
Faulty torque converter Replace torque converter
Faulty locking clutch Replace torque converter
Exhaust system vibration Align exhaust system
Engine performance Diagnose and tune engine
