Extension Housing, Bearing & Bushing: Removal

1. On 4WD models, remove transfer case. On all models, disconnect propeller shaft at rear axle. Slide shaft assembly out of extension housing. Remove extension housing oil seal, speedometer pinion and adapter assembly. Drain transmission fluid.
2. Remove extension housing-to-crossmember and support bolts. Using a jack, raise transmission slightly. Remove crossmember and support. On American Motors Eagle, remove catalytic converter support bracket bolts, rear support cushion with adapter and transmission rear bearing cover plate from extension housing.
3. On models equipped with console shift, remove 2 bolts securing gearshift torque shaft lower bracket to housing. Swing bracket out of way for extension housing removal.
   NOTE: When removing or installing extension housing, gearshift lever must be in "1" (Low) position. This positions parking lock control rod rearward so it can be disengaged or engaged with parking lock sprag.
4. Remove extension housing-to-transmission bolts. Remove 2 retaining screws, plate and gasket from bottom of housing mounting pad. With large snap ring pliers, spread snap ring on output shaft bearing while tapping extension housing off output shaft bearing. Pull housing rearward to disengage parking lock control rod knob from sprag. Remove housing.
