Extension Housing, Bearing & Bushing: Installation

Install new gasket on transmission case. Position output shaft bearing retaining snap ring in extension housing. Slide extension housing on output shaft, guiding parking lock control rod knob past parking sprag. While spreading large snap ring in housing, carefully tap housing into place. Release snap ring.
NOTE: Ensure snap ring is fully seated in bearing outer race ring groove.
Install extension housing-to-transmission bolts. Tighten bolts. Install gasket, plate and screws on bottom of extension housing mounting pad. Install center crossmember and rear mount assembly. Lower transmission. Install and tighten extension housing-to-support bolts.
On vehicles with console shift, align gearshift torque shaft lower bracket with extension housing. Install and tighten retaining bolts. On American Motors vehicles, install transmission rear bearing cover plate, rear support cushion, adapter and catalytic converter support bracket bolts.
On all models, install speedometer pinion and adapter. On American Motors Eagle, install transfer case. Install propeller shaft. Fill transmission to correct fluid level.
