Rear Clutch: Inspection

  1. Inspect plates and discs for flatness. Inspect facing material of driving discs. If discs are warped, cone-shaped or worn excessively, replace. Check discs and plates for worn splines or lugs.
  2. Check clutch retainer lug grooves and band mating surface for wear. Ensure check ball in retainer moves freely. Check seals for wear, hardness or cracking. Check spring(s), retainer and snap ring for distortion.
  3. Ensure check ball in piston moves freely. Check seal ring surfaces in clutch retainer for nicks and scratches. Check seals for wear, hardness or cracking.
  4. Check interlocking seal rings on input shaft for wear or broken locks. Ensure rings turn freely in grooves. DO NOT remove rings unless replacement is required.
  5. Check bushing in input shaft for wear or scores. Measure thrust washer between rear clutch and front clutch. If less than .061-.063" (1.55-1.60 mm), replace.
