Oil Pump/Reaction Shaft Support: Inspection

  1. Inspect interlocking seal rings, pump body and support bushings for wear or damage. Ensure rings turn freely in grooves. DO NOT remove rings unless replacement is required.
  2. Check machined surfaces of pump body and support for nicks or burrs. Check pump rotors for scoring or pitting. With rotors cleaned and installed in pump body, Place straightedge across face of rotors and pump body. Using a feeler gauge, measure rotor clearance. Clearance should be .0010-.0025" (.030-.060 mm).
  3. Measure rotor tip clearance between inner and outer rotor teeth. Clearance should be .005-.010" (.13-.25 mm). Clearance between outer rotor and oil pump body should be .004-.008" (.010-.20 mm).
  4. On all models except 727, remove seal rings so that thrust washer between front clutch retainer and reaction shaft can be removed. If washer thickness is less than .061-.063" (1.55-1.60 mm), replace.
