Draining & Refilling

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1984 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1984 Dodge Diplomat, and 1984 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Loosen oil pan bolts. Tap pan to break it loose allowing fluid to drain. Remove pan bolts and remove pan.
  2. On all models, install a new filter on bottom of valve body and tighten screws. Clean oil pan, making sure round magnet is over boss in right front corner of oil pan.
  3. Install pan with new gasket. Add 4 quarts (3.8L) of transmission fluid. Start engine and allow to idle for at least 2 minutes.
  4. With engine at curb idle and parking brake applied, move shift selector lever through all positions ending in "NEUTRAL" position.
  5. Add enough fluid to bring level to "ADD 1 PINT" mark on dipstick. Recheck fluid level after transmission has reached normal operating temperature.
  6. Fluid level should be between "FULL" and "ADD 1 PINT" marks on dipstick.
CAUTION: Do not overfill. Reseat dipstick fully.
