RWD Models A-904-La & A-727: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1989 Dodge Diplomat, and 1989 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Some models require the exhaust system be dropped for clearance. Remove engine to transmission struts (if equipped).
  2. Remove cooler lines at transmission. Remove cooler line bracket, starter motor and torque converter cover. Loosen oil pan bolts, tap pan to break it loose allowing fluid to drain. Reinstall pan.
  3. Index mark torque converter and drive plate for installation reference. Using socket on crankshaft vibration damper bolt, manually rotate engine clockwise for torque converter mounting bolts for removal. Index mark drive shaft and rear yoke for installation reference. Remove drive shaft.
  4. Unplug neutral safety switch harness from transmission switch. Disconnect gearshift rod, torque shaft assembly and throttle rod lever from left side of transmission. Remove linkage at bellcrank from transmission (if equipped).
NOTE: Replace plastic grommets if linkage rods are disassembled.
  5. Remove oil filler tube and speedometer cable. Support rear of engine with jack stand. Raise transmission slightly with jack to relieve load on mounts. Remove bolts securing transmission mount to crossmember and crossmember to frame. Remove crossmember.
  6. Remove bellhousing bolts. Pull transmission assembly back. Attach a small "C" clamp to edge of converter housing to hold torque converter in place during transmission removal. Slowly lower transmission from vehicle.
CAUTION: Flush oil cooler and lines before replacing transmission.
