TORQUEFLITE A-904-La (RWD Models): Installation

CAUTION: Flush oil cooler and cooler lines before replacing transmission.

To install, reverse removal procedures. To install the converter, rotate pump rotors with Pump Alignment (C-3756) until 2 small holes in handle are vertical.
Hold converter hub slots vertical to fully engage pump inner rotor lugs. Slide converter over input shaft and reaction shaft. Ensure surface of converter front cover lug is at least 1/2" below front edge of transmission when converter is installed.
Attach a small "C" clamp to converter housing. Inspect converter drive plate for distortion or cracks and replace if necessary. Coat converter hub hole in crankshaft with multi-purpose grease.
NOTE: When drive plate replacement is necessary, ensure both transmission dowel pins are in engine block.
Place transmission and converter assembly on a jack. Rotate converter so mark on converter (made during removal) will align with mark on drive plate. Offset holes in drive plate are located next to 1/8" hole in inner circle of plate. A stamped "O" identifies offset hole in converter.
Place transmission in position rear of engine. Install and tighten all bolts. Adjust shift and throttle linkage. Refill transmission with DEXTRON II automatic transmission fluid.
To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Tighten bolts holding struts-to-transmission before tightening strut-to-engine bolts (if equipped).
