All RWD Models (A-904-La): Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1985 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1985 Dodge Diplomat, and 1985 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine to transmission struts (if equipped). Remove cooler lines at transmission. Remove cooler line bracket, starter motor and torque converter cover. Loosen oil pan bolts, tap pan to break it loose allowing fluid to drain. Reinstall pan.
NOTE: Some models require that exhaust system be dropped for clearance.
  2. Mark converter and drive plate for installation reference. Using a socket wrench on crankshaft vibration damper bolt, rotate engine clockwise to position converter attaching bolts for removal. Mark drive shaft and yoke for installation reference. Remove drive shaft.
  3. Disconnect electrical leads. Disconnect gearshift rod, torque shaft assembly, and throttle rod lever from left side of transmission. Remove linkage at bellcrank (if so equipped) from transmission.
  4. Remove oil filler tube and speedometer cable. Support rear of engine with safety stand. Raise transmission slightly to relieve load on mounts. Remove bolts securing transmission mount-to- crossmember and crossmember-to-frame. Remove crossmember.
  5. Remove converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts. Carefully work transmission and converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels, and disengage converter hub from end of crankshaft.
NOTE: Attach a small "C" clamp to edge of converter housing to hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
  6. Lower transmission and remove from under vehicle. To remove converter assembly, remove "C" clamp from edge of converter housing, and carefully slide assembly out of transmission.
