All RWD Models (A-904-La): Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1985 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1985 Dodge Diplomat, and 1985 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
If transmission was removed to correct a malfunction that generated sludge or heavy accumulations of metal or friction material particles, the oil cooler and cooler lines must be thoroughly flushed and torque converter replaced.
- To install, reverse removal procedures and note the following: To install the converter, rotate pump rotors with pump tool C-3756 for A-904-LA until 2 small holes in handle are vertical.
- Carefully slide converter over input shaft and reaction shaft. Make sure converter hub slots are also vertical and fully engage pump inner rotor lugs. Test for full engagement by placing a straightedge on face of case. Surface of converter front cover lug should be at least 1/2" to rear of straightedge when converter is pushed all the way into transmission.
- Attach a small "C" clamp to converter housing to hold converter in place during transmission installation. Inspect converter drive plate for distortion or cracks and replace if necessary. Coat converter hub hole in crankshaft with multi-purpose grease.NOTE: When drive plate replacement is necessary, make sure both transmission dowel pins are in engine block and that they are protruding far enough to hold transmission in alignment.
- Place transmission and converter assembly on a transmission jack and position under vehicle for installation. Raise or tilt as necessary to align transmission to engine. Rotate converter so mark on converter (made during removal) will align with mark on drive plate.
- Offset holes in drive plate are located next to 1/8" hole in inner circle of plate. A stamped "O" identifies offset hole in converter.
- Carefully work transmission assembly forward over engine block dowels with converter hub entering crankshaft opening. Place transmission in position rear of engine. Install and tighten all bolts. Adjust shift and throttle linkage. Refill transmission with DEXRON II automatic transmission fluid.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Tighten bolts holding strut-to-transmission before tightening strut-to-engine bolts (on models equipped with engine-to-transmission struts).
