A404, A413 & A470 TORQUEFLITE Transaxle: Removal
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1983 Chrysler New Yorker, 1983 Chrysler LeBaron, 1983 Chrysler Imperial, 1983 Chrysler Fifth Avenue, and 1983 Chrysler E Class. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Transaxle and torque converter must be removed as an assembly, otherwise, the converter drive plate, pump housing, or oil seal may be damaged.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect throttle and shift linkage from transaxle. Disconnect upper transaxle cooler line at transaxle fitting.
- Using a support fixture, support engine. Remove upper bell housing attaching bolts. Raise and support vehicle and remove both front wheels.
- Remove splash shield from left fender. Drain transaxle fluid, then remove differential cover. Disconnect speedometer cable and pinion assembly from transaxle. Remove sway bar. Remove drive axle shafts as previously described.
- Mark torque converter and drive plate for reassembly reference, then remove converter-to-drive plate bolts. Use access hole in right splash shield to rotate crankshaft for access to converter-to-drive plate bolts.
- Disconnect lower cooler line and neutral safety switch wire from transaxle. Remove engine mount bracket from front crossmember, then remove front mount insulator through bolt and remaining bell housing attaching bolts.
- Support transaxle with a transmission jack. Remove left engine mount. Pry transaxle away from engine, then lower assembly from vehicle.NOTE: For removal clearance, it may be necessary to pry transaxle away from engine between extension housing and engine block.
