Column Shift (RWD Models)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1989 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1989 Dodge Diplomat, and 1989 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place gear selector in "P" position. Loosen adjustment swivel lock screw, making sure swivel block is free to turn on shift rod. Move shift lever on transmission all the way to rear detent position (Park). Tighten swivel lock screw to 100 INCH lbs. (11 N.m).
  2. Check adjustment by moving gear selector. Detents for Drive and Neutral should be within limits of selector gate stops. Starter should operate only with gear selector in Park or Neutral. See Fig 1.
CAUTION: Whenever it is necessary to remove linkage cable from lever, replace old plastic grommets with new ones. Use pliers to snap new grommet onto lever and rod into grommet.
