Pinpoint Test E: Soft Close Actuator Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. E1: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
NOTE: Latch in actuated position (fully cinched)
    1. Refer to the relevant article of the repair information and remove the tailgate trim for access to the soft close actuator Refer to: TAILGATE TRIM PANEL .

    2. Check the position of the cinch actuator lever on the latch.

Is the cinch actuator lever actuated?

    Yes  : GO to  E2.

    No  : GO to  E3.

  2. E2: LATCH TEST
    1. Remove the soft close cable.

Does the position of the cinch actuator lever return to the rest position?

    Yes  : GO to  E3.

No  : Install a new tailgate latch assembly as necessary due to internal mechanical failure.

  3. E3: LATCH TEST
    1. If not already done, remove the soft close cable and clasp the latch to the secondary position and use the actuator arm to fully clasp the latch.

    Does the latch fully clasp

    Yes  : GO to  E4.

No  : Install a new tailgate latch assembly as necessary due to internal mechanical failure.

  4. E4: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR EXTERIOR CABLE CHECK
    1. Check the integrity of the soft close actuator exterior cable.

Are there signs of breakages, kinks or fraying? Is the cable correctly routed?

Yes  : Install a new soft close actuator assembly.

    No  : GO to  E5.

  5. E5: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
    NOTE: Latch signals
    1. Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams and measure the signal output status for latch signal A, signal B, signal C when operating the latch claw

Does the latch A signal state change when the latch claw is moved from open to the secondary clasped position (first click on closure)?

    Yes  : GO to  E6.

No  : Install a new tailgate latch as necessary. DTC  B1463-02/11 or B1464-02 should be set in the RGTM

  6. E6: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
NOTE: The soft close motor will receive voltage in one direction and switch polarity to reverse after cinch motion is complete.
    1. Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams and measure the voltage at the soft close actuator during actuation (by closing the latch to the secondary clasp position) at the soft close actuator motor power and ground pins.

Does the soft close actuator receive an acceptable voltage during both cinch and retract operations?

    Yes  : GO to  E8.

    No  : GO to  E7.

  7. E7: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
NOTE: The soft close motor will receive voltage in one direction and switch polarity to reverse after cinch motion is complete.
    1. Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams and measure the voltage at the RGTM  during actuation (by closing the latch to the secondary clasp position) at the RGTM  soft close motor power and ground pins.

Is a voltage change present during both cinch and retract operations?

Yes  : GO to PINPOINT TEST E . step 8.

No  : Install a new RGTM

  8. E8: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
    1. Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams, disconnect the soft close actuator harness connector, check the power and ground circuit from the RGTM  for high resistance, open circuit.

Does the soft close actuator harness have high resistance or open circuit?

Yes  : Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams and repair the wiring harness as necessary

    No  : GO to  E9.

  9. E9: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
    1. Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams and measure the ground pin on the soft close actuator during the actuation of the unit.

Does the signal state change during the actuation process?

    Yes  : GO to  E10.

No  : Install a new tailgate soft close actuator as necessary. DTC B1316-02 should also be set in the RGTM  .

  10. E10: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
    1. Refer to the appropriate electrical circuit diagrams, disconnect the soft close actuator harness connector and measure the resistance across the motor power and ground pins.

Is the resistance between 2 ohms Ω and 20 ohms Ω

    Yes  : GO to  E11.

No  : Install a new tailgate soft close actuator as necessary.

  11. E11: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
    1. Reconnect the soft close actuator harness connection. With the soft close cable still detached perform functionality check (clasp latch to the secondary position) and monitor any noise from the soft close actuator motor.

Does the soft close actuator make an audible noise?

    Yes  : GO to  E12.

No  : Install a new tailgate soft close actuator as necessary. Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) B1316-02 and/or B1316- 11/12/13/19 should also be set in the RGTM

  12. E12: SOFT CLOSE ACTUATOR TEST
    1. With the soft close cable still detached perform functionality check (clasp latch to the secondary position) and monitor cable movement from the soft close actuator motor.

Does the cable retract or extend with actuation?

Yes  : Contact Jaguar Land Rover Technical Assistance with all of the above findings and information.

No  : Install a new tailgate soft close actuator as necessary. For a warranty claim, make a note of the pinpoint test number.
