Pollution Sensor (If Equipped)
The Pollution sensor is located in the air intake of the climate control assembly.
The pollution sensor uses a semiconductor material, that changes its electrical resistance if exposed to specific gases. The pollution sensor uses this property to monitor for gases such as Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). The pollution sensor determines the quality of the outside air entering the passenger compartment.
The pollution sensor transmits the air quality to the HVAC control module in a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal, as 1 of the following 4 conditions:
- Static or reduced pollution levels.
- Small increase in pollution levels.
- Medium increase in pollution levels.
- Rapid or large increase in pollution levels.
The pollution sensor has a 3 pin connector that connects to the climate control assembly wiring harness through the wiring harness to the HVAC. The 3 pin connector has the following electrical connections:
- Power supply from the HVAC.
- The pollution PWM signal to the HVAC.
- Ground connection through the HVAC.
Based on the signal from the pollution sensor, the HVAC controls the intake air source to reduce the amount of contaminants entering the passenger compartment. Recirculation can be selected with the recirculation switch, but it is not possible to select fresh air. When the air pollution is less than a specified level, fresh air can be selected.
