| A | Active exhaust disabled |
| B | Active exhaust enabled |
The position of the active exhaust valves are set by the PCM.
The position of the active exhaust valves is dependent on:
- Engine speed
- Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor position signal
- The selected mode by the active exhaust switch or the ATCM.
When the vehicle shuts down, the active exhaust valves remain at the set position. On vehicle start up, 2 operation modes are available.
The operation modes are the following:
- Pressing and holding the 'Engine start' button - The active exhaust valves stay in closed position for a quiet start (regardless of the ATCM selection).
- Normal press and release on the 'Engine start' button - The active exhaust valves open to enhance the exhaust sound (except in 'Comfort/ECO' drive modes).
When the active exhaust system is activated manually by operating the active exhaust switch it notifies the ATCM through hardwired connection. The ATCM then converts the signal, and sends a message to the BCM /GWM through the HS CAN chassis systems bus. The BCM /GWM forward the signal to the PCM through the FlexRay bus.
The PCM sends a control signal to operate the active exhaust actuators through a hardwired connection to the Active Exhaust Module (AEM). The AEM intercepts this control signal and feeds it independently to the left and right actuators. If the signal state changes, each actuator should move. The movement is monitored by the AEM by measuring the supply current in each circuit between the AEM and the actuators. If the current is too small or happens at the wrong time then the movement is deemed to be erroneous, and the actuators are powered off then on to reset them by the AEM. The AEM can therefore recover the valve operation in the case that the actuators are temporarily blocked or suffer from a Radio Frequency (RF) susceptibility.
