Lower Timing Cover Sealing (G2920267): Repair

This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

CAUTION: Failure to follow this step may result in damage to the crankshaft rear oil seal.

The existing special tool JLR-303-1674 must be modified as illustrated before use.

Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674
CAUTION: Make sure the locating dowels are positioned as shown in the illustration. Failure to position the dowels as shown in the illustration may result in engine damage.

Using a suitable tool, position the dowels as shown in the illustration.
CAUTION: Make sure all the mating faces are clean and free from foreign material.

Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.
CAUTION:
- Make sure all the mating faces are clean and free from foreign material.
- The lower timing cover must be installed within 7 minutes of applying the RTV sealant.

Apply a continuous 3 mm diameter bead of sealant to the area illustrated.
CAUTION:
- Take care not to damage the cylinder head gasket when installing the lower timing cover.
- Make sure the dowels are correctly located.

- Install the lower timing cover.
- Install and tighten the 4 bolts.
  Torque : 10 Nm

Release the 4 bolts by a quarter of a turn.

Install and tighten the 3 bolts.

Torque : 12 Nm
NOTE: Install the bolts to the positions noted on removal.

Install and tighten the 12 bolts.

Torque : 25 Nm

- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal alignment tool as illustrated.
  Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674A
- Install and tighten the 2 M8 bolts.
  Torque : 10 Nm
CAUTION:
- Make sure that the mating face is clean and free of foreign material.
- If the seal is removed from the spacer provided, a new seal must be installed.
NOTE: The component labelled (2) in the illustration is an alignment spacer provided with the new seal.

Position the new crankshaft oil seal (1) and spacer (2) over special tool JLR-303-1674A. Carefully slide the crankshaft oil seal (1) over the end of the crankshaft and discard the spacer (2).

Renew Part: Crankshaft rear seal Quantity: 1 .

- Install the second part of special tool JLR-303-1674A to position the crankshaft oil seal correctly.
  Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674A
- Tighten the bolt until the seal is fully installed and the bolt stops turning.
Remove the special tools.
Remove the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674A
