Fuel Tank (G1901946): Removal

WARNING:
  • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
  • Place the vehicle in a well ventilated, quarantined area and arrange 'No Smoking/Petrol Fumes' signs about the vehicle.
CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles 

  1. Always follow the fuel system health and safety precautions when doing any repairs to the fuel system.

    Refer to: PETROL AND PETROL-ETHANOL FUEL SYSTEMS HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

  2. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .

  3. Drain the fuel tank.

    Refer to: FUEL TANK DRAINING - INGENIUM I4 2.0L DIESEL/INGENIUM I4 2.0L PETROL/TDV6 3.0L DIESEL/V6 S/C 3.0L PETROL .

  4. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING .

  5. Remove the driveshaft.

    Refer to: DRIVESHAFT - TDV6 3.0L DIESEL/V6 S/C 3.0L PETROL .

    Refer to: DRIVESHAFT - INGENIUM I4 2.0L PETROL .

  6. NOTE: Repeat the step for the other side.

    Remove the 3 bolts and the mudflap.

  7. NOTE: Repeat the step for the other side.

    • Remove the 2 nuts.
    • Remove the 15 bolts and the undershield.

    • Release the clamp.
    • Disconnect the fuel filler pipe.

    Remove the 5 nuts and the fuel tank shield.

  10. CAUTION: If equipped.

    Remove the 2 nuts and the 2 fuel tank shields.

    Disconnect the 2 fuel pipes.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Vehicles with fuel fired heater

    Disconnect the 2 fuel pipes.

    • Disconnect the fuel pipe.
    • Release the clip.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    All vehicles

    • Position a suitable support below the fuel tank.

      General Equipment: Transmission jack 

    • Lower the fuel tank.
    • Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
    • Disconnect the fuel pipe.
    • Remove the 4 nuts and the 2 brackets.
  15. NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

    • Disconnect the 2 fuel pipes.
    • Release the 2 fuel pipes from the 4 clips.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    Vehicles with fuel fired heater

    • Disconnect the fuel pipe.
    • Release the fuel pipe from the 5 clips.

    The following step(s) applies to: 

    All vehicles 

  17. Remove the fuel pump and sensor unit.

    Refer to: LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY .
