Upper Timing Chain - Remove For Access (G2787526): Installation

The following step(s) applies to: 

All vehicles 

1. NOTE: Maintain tension on the chain to prevent the coloured link from disengaging with its sprocket position.

   • Install the upper timing chain.
   • Make sure that the coloured link is aligned as illustrated.
2. CAUTION: Make sure that the upper timing chain does not come off the idler sprocket and stays in the correct position.

   • Install a new left upper timing chain guide.

     Renew Part: Upper timing chain guide Quantity: 1 . 

   • Install and tighten the new bolt.

     Renew Part: Left side timing chain guide bolt Quantity: 1 . 

     Torque  : 25 Nm 

3. CAUTION: Make sure that the upper timing chain does not come off the idler sprocket and stays in the correct position.

   • Install the intake camshaft VCT  unit. Make sure that the correct VCT  unit is installed as noted in the removal steps.
   • Make sure that the camshaft pin is correctly seated in the VCT  unit as illustrated.
   • Install and tighten a new VCT  unit center bolt.

     Renew Part: Variable camshaft timing actuator bolts Quantity: 1 . 

     Torque 

     1. Stage 1: 10 Nm 
     2. Stage 2: Loosen 90° 
   • Check if the highlighted link on the timing chain is aligned with the timing mark on the VCT  unit as illustrated.
4. NOTE: Maintain tension on the chain to prevent the coloured link from disengaging with its sprocket position.

   Install a new timing chain tensioner guide.

   Renew Part: Upper timing chain guide Quantity: 1 . 

5. CAUTION: Make sure that the upper timing chain does not come off the idler sprocket and stays in the correct position.

   • Install the exhaust camshaft VCT  unit. Make sure that the correct VCT  unit is installed as noted in the removal steps.
   • Make sure that the camshaft pin is correctly seated in the VCT  unit as illustrated.
   • Install and tighten a new VCT  unit center bolt.

     Renew Part: Variable camshaft timing actuator bolts Quantity: 1 . 

     Torque 

     1. Stage 1: 10 Nm 
     2. Stage 2: Loosen 90° 
   • Check if the highlighted link on the timing chain is aligned with the timing mark on the VCT  unit as illustrated.
6. CAUTION: Make sure that the upper timing chain does not come off the idler sprocket and stays in the correct position.

   • Install a new upper timing chain guide.

     Renew Part: Upper timing chain guide Quantity: 1 . 

   • Install and tighten the 2 bolts.

     Renew Part: Upper timing chain upper guide bolt Quantity: 2 . 

     Torque  : 11 Nm

   Install the special tool as illustrated and tighten the bolts.

   Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1636 

   Torque  : 13 Nm

   Inspect if the new timing chain tensioner is in the reset position. The ratchet clip should be in the first groove as illustrated.

9. CAUTION: Make sure that a new upper timing chain tensioner is installed.

   Install and tighten the new timing chain tensioner.

   Renew Part: Upper timing chain tensioner Quantity: 1 . 

   Torque  : 55 Nm 

10. CAUTION:

    • Do not directly touch the timing chain tensioner at this stage.
    • Make sure the timing chain tensioner is fully deployed.

    To correctly deploy the timing chain tensioner, push the timing chain guide against timing chain tensioner in the position illustrated.

    • Fully tighten the VCT  bolts.

      Torque 

      1. Stage 1: 25 Nm 
      2. Stage 2: 60°

    Remove the special tool.

    • Release the 2 special tool bolts.
    • Remove the special tool JLR-303-1630.

      Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1630

    • Release the 2 special tool bolts.
    • Remove the special tools JLR-303-1630 and JLR-303-1686.

      Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1630  , JLR-303-1686 

    The following step(s) applies to:

16. NOTE: This step is to make sure that the timing components are properly installed.

    Use the special tool JLR-303-1656 to rotate the crankshaft 2 times clockwise.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1656

    • Install the charge air cooler intake pipe.
    • Secure the charge air cooler intake pipe retaining clip.

    • Install the hose.
    • Secure the hose clamp.
    • Connect the electrical connector.

    • Install the hose.
    • Secure the hose clamp.
    • Secure the hose clip.

    • Secure the 2 hose connections.
    • Secure the hose clip.
21. Install the upper timing cover.

    Refer to: UPPER TIMING COVER (G2498222) .

22. Install the charge air cooler.

    Refer to: CHARGE AIR COOLER (G1998338) .

23. Connect the 12 V system.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .

    Power Up the HV  system. Only technicians qualified to EVAP  level are allowed to perform this procedure. It is mandated that all technicians involved with the steps in this procedure have read and understood the EV  Safety Rules.
