Fuel Injectors (G1998238): Removal

WARNING:
  • Residual pressure may still be present in the fuel system when disconnecting a fuel line. Make sure to cover the fuel line connection with a lint free cloth to capture any escaping fuel.
  • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
CAUTION: Extreme cleanliness must be exercised when handling these components. Make sure that all tools and the surrounding area is clean before commencing work.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustration showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Always follow the fuel system health and safety precautions, when carrying out any repairs to the fuel system.

    Refer to: PETROL AND PETROL-ETHANOL FUEL SYSTEMS HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  2. Release the fuel pressure.

    Refer to: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE

  3. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS

    Remove the engine cover.

    Remove the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) material.

    Disconnect the breather.

    Disconnect the High Pressure (HP) fuel pump electrical connector.

    Disconnect and reposition the engine wiring harness.

  9. Clean all the fuel line unions and the surrounding area before working on the fuel system.
  10. WARNING:
    • Residual pressure may still be present in the fuel system when disconnecting a fuel line. Make sure to cover the fuel line connection with a lint free cloth to capture any escaping fuel.
    • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.

    • Carefully release the HP  fuel line. Wait until the residual pressure is fully released.
    • Disconnect the HP  fuel line from the high pressure pump.
  11. WARNING:
    • Residual pressure may still be present in the fuel system when disconnecting a fuel line. Make sure to cover the fuel line connection with a lint free cloth to capture any escaping fuel.
    • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.

    • Carefully release the Low Pressure (LP) fuel line. Wait until the residual pressure is fully released.
    • Disconnect the LP  fuel line from the high pressure pump.
  12. WARNING:
    • Residual pressure may still be present in the fuel system when disconnecting a fuel line. Make sure to cover the fuel line connection with a lint free cloth to capture any escaping fuel.
    • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.

    • Disconnect the fuel supply line connector.
    • Remove the 2 fuel lines.
  13. Remove the spark plugs.

    Refer to: SPARK PLUGS

  14. CAUTION: Discard the clips if damaged or worn.

    Release the fuel injector wiring harness.

  15. WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
    CAUTION:
    • Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.
    • Loosen each of the bolts 1 turn at a time until the spring tension is fully released.

    Remove the fuel rail.

    Remove the fuel injector wiring harness.

    Remove and discard the 4 fuel injector spring clamps.

  18. CAUTION: Make sure that the special tool is correctly installed.

    Install the special tool to the fuel injector.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-310-254 

  19. CAUTION: Make sure that the special tools are held square to the fuel injector during removal.
    NOTE: Make sure that the fuel injector is removed smoothly.

    Using the special tools, carefully remove the fuel injector.

    Special Tool(s): 100-012, 100-012-01, JLR-310-254 

  20. Remove the special tools from the fuel injector.
  21. CAUTION: Do not use any sharp tools to remove the O-ring seal as damage could occur to the fuel injector.

    Remove and discard the O-ring seal and washer.

  22. CAUTION:
    • Do not use a knife to remove the Teflon™ seal as damage could occur to the fuel injector.
    • Pinch the Teflon™ seal to allow the tool to cut the Teflon™ seal without damaging the fuel injector.
    • Do not cut the Teflon seal too deep as damage could occur to the fuel injector.

    Remove and discard the Teflon™ seal.

  23. Repeat removal steps  18 to  22 for the remaining fuel injectors.
