ITEM DESCRIPTION
1 Exhaust back-pressure sensor
2 Electrical connector
3 Vent hose
4 Connection hose to exhaust system

The exhaust back-pressure sensor measures the system pressure and transmits the data to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). As the particulate matter levels in the Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) increase the exhaust gas flow becomes restricted increasing the system back-pressure. If the back-pressure exceeds a predetermined limit the PCM will reduce the torque output to protect the engine. Excessive exhaust back pressure may lead to potential damage caused by misfire or exhaust valve malfunctioning if the engine is operated at high engine speeds.

The sensor is mounted on a bracket at the rear of the engine. It is connected by a pipe to the exhaust system between the catalytic converter and the GPF.
