Pinpoint Test G: Transmission Shift Quality

  1. G1: VISUAL INSPECTION 
    1. Check the installation/integrity of the engine/transmission mounts and fixings.

      Are the engine and transmission mounts correctly installed and at a serviceable level?

      Yes:  GO to  G2.

      No:  Correctly install/repair the engine/transmission mounts and then perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G2. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

  2. G2: VISUAL INSPECTION 
    1. Check the transmission for any oil leaks.

      Does the transmission have an oil leak?

      Yes:  Rectify the automatic transmission oil leak and then perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G10.

      No:  GO to  G3.

  3. G3: AIR PATH ADAPTIONS 
    NOTE: This is only applicable to diesel engines.
    1. Using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'Powertrain Control Module [PCM]'.
      • Select 'ECU Functions'.
      • Select 'Air path set-up routine'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Run Engine air path set up routine.

      Yes:  Perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G4. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  Rectify the air path fault and then perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G4. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

  4. G4: CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATE 
    1. Check for software updates to the PCM  using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, check if the following control modules are configured with the latest level software: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'Powertrain Control Module [PCM]'.
      • Select 'Update ECU'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Update the PCM  software.

      Yes:  When the PCM  software has been updated perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G5. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  If no PCM  software update was required GO to  G5.

  5. G5: CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATE 
    1. Check for software updates to the ABS  using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, check if the following control modules are configured with the latest level software: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'Anti-Lock Brake System Control Module [ABS]'.
      • Select 'Update ECU'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Update the ABS  software.

      Yes:  When the ABS  software has been updated perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G6. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  If no ABS  software update was required GO to  G6.

  6. G6: CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATE 
    1. Check for software updates to the GWM  using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, check if the following control modules are configured with the latest level software: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'Gateway Module 'A' [GWM]'.
      • Select 'Update ECU'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Update the GWM  software.

      Yes:  When the GWM  software has been updated perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G7. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  If no GWM  software update was required GO to  G7.

  7. G7: CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATE 
    1. Check for software updates to the HVAC  using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, check if the following control modules are configured with the latest level software: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'HVAC Control Module [HVAC]'.
      • Select 'Update ECU'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Update the HVAC  software.

      Yes:  When the HVAC  software has been updated perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G8. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  If no HVAC  software update was required GO to  G8.

  8. G8: CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATE 
    1. Check for software updates to the TCM  using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, check if the following control modules are configured with the latest level software: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'Transmission Control Module [TCM]'.
      • Select 'Update ECU'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Update the TCM  software.

      Yes:  When the TCM  software has been updated perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G9. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  If no TCM  software update was required GO to  G9.

  9. G9: CHECK FOR SOFTWARE UPDATE 
    1. Check for software updates to the TCCM  using the JLR  approved diagnostic equipment, check if the following control modules are configured with the latest level software: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'TCCM  '.
      • Select 'Update ECU'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Update the TCCM  software.

      Yes:  When the TCCM  software has been updated perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G10. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  If no TCCM  software update was required GO to  G10.

  10. G10: CHECK THE TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL 
    1. Using the JLR  diagnostic equipment check the transmission oil level: Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
      • Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
      • Select 'Transmission Control Module [TCM]'.
      • Select 'ECU Functions'.
      • Select '8-speed ZF - Automatic Transmission Fluid Level Check'.
      • Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.

      Is the transmission oil level correct?

      Yes:  GO to  G11.

      No:  Rectify low/high oil level. Perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present GO to  G11. If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

  11. G11: TRANSMISSION OIL CONDITION 
    1. Check the transmission oil using the oil color chart. Refer to: TRANSMISSION OIL COLOR CHART

      Is the transmission oil condition acceptable?

      Yes:  Perform a road test and re-assess the quality of the gear shift. If the gear shift concern is still present raise a Technical Assistance (TA). If the gear shift concern has now been corrected return the vehicle to the customer.

      No:  Raise a TA  .
