Steering Column (G1817736): Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jaguar XE and 2019 Jaguar XE. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
  • To prevent accidental deployment, you must power down the Restraints Control Module (RCM). Wait at least 2 minutes after you disconnect the startup battery ground cable before you do any work on the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS). If you do not follow these instructions, it can cause injury or death.
  • Do not connect any electrical test device or equipment to the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) connectors.
  • Always wear safety glasses when working on an airbag equipped vehicle and when handling an airbag. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
CAUTION: Make sure that the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  • This procedure contains illustrations for left hand drive vehicles, right hand drive vehicles are similar.
  • Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Make sure the steering column is in the fully extended position to allow access to the steering column fixings.
  2. Make sure that the steering column lock actuator is not engaged and in the service position. Failure to follow this instruction will make installation of the steering system impossible and may result in damage to the vehicle.

    Refer to: STEERING COLUMN SERVICE POSITION 

  3. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING

  4. Make the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) safe.

    Refer to: STANDARD WORKSHOP PRACTICES

  5. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  6. Remove the engine undershield.

    Refer to: ENGINE UNDERSHIELD - PROJECT 8

  7. CAUTION:
    • Do not turn the steering wheel with the steering column lower shaft disconnected as damage to the clockspring may occur.
    • Care must be taken to avoid damaging the aluminum.
    NOTE: Note the steering column lower shaft to steering gear alignment marks.

    • Remove and discard the bolt.
    • Release the steering column lower shaft from the steering gear.
  8. Remove the instrument panel lower trim panel.

    Refer to the appropriate service information

  9. Remove the steering wheel.

    Refer to: STEERING WHEEL

    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the clockspring and multifunction switch assembly.

    Reposition the carpet.

    Reposition the Noise, Vibration and Harness (NVH) material.

    Release the steering column boot retaining clip.

  14. CAUTION: Note the position of the seal.

    Reposition the steering column boot.

  15. NOTE: Vehicles with electric adjusting steering column.

    • Release the wiring harness clip.
    • Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
  16. NOTE: Vehicles with manual adjusting steering column.

    • Release the wiring harness clip.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.

    • Remove the 4 bolts.
    • Remove the steering column.
  18. CAUTION: Do not adjust the interlocked nuts as they are preset.
    NOTE:
    • Only do the following step(s) if a new component is to be installed.
    • Vehicles with manual adjusting steering column.
    • Note the fitted position of the steering column adjustment cable.

    Remove the steering column adjustment cable.

  19. CAUTION: Note the fitted position the special washers.

    Remove the 2 special washers.

    • Remove and discard the bolt.
    • Remove the lower steering column shaft.

    Remove the steering column boot and NVH material.

    Use a suitable tool to remove and discard the 2 security bolts.

    Remove the Electric Steering Column Lock (ESCL).
