Steering Column (G1817736): Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jaguar XE and 2019 Jaguar XE. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. NOTE:
    • Vehicles with manual adjusting steering column.
    • Only do the following step(s) if the component was previously removed.

    Install the Electric Steering Column Lock (ESCL).

  2. NOTE: Vehicles with manual adjusting steering column.

    Install and tighten the 2 new security bolts until the hexagon shears.

    Renew Part: Security bolts Quantity: 2  .

  3. Install the steering column boot and Noise, Vibration and Harness (NVH) material.
  4. CAUTION: Care must be taken to avoid damaging the aluminium.
    NOTE: Make sure to clean the threads prior to installation.

    Inspect the both lower steering column shaft joints. Replace if damaged or worn.

  5. CAUTION:
    • Make sure that a new steering shaft connection bolt is installed.
    • Fixings must be started by hand to avoid damaging threads.
    • The fixing must be fully tightened immediately following installation. Do not leave the fixing partially installed as adhesive may be activated.

    • Install the lower steering column shaft.
    • Install and tighten the new bolt.

      Renew Part: Steering column lower shaft upper bolt Quantity: 1  .

      Torque  : 22Nm 

  6. CAUTION: Make sure that the steering column adjustment cable is correctly installed.
    NOTE: Vehicles with manual adjusting steering column.

    Install the steering column adjustment cable. Check for correct operation of the steering column adjustment cable.

  7. CAUTION: Make sure the washers are installed correctly.

    • Install the steering column.
    • Install and tighten the 4 bolts.

      Torque  : 25Nm 

  9. CAUTION: Make sure that the steering column boot retaining clip is correctly located.

    Install the steering column boot and NVH material.

  10. Install the wiring harness.
  11. Install the carpet.
    • Install the clockspring and multifunction switch assembly.
    • Install and tighten the 2 bolts.

      Torque  : 1.9Nm 

  13. Install the steering wheel.

    Refer to: STEERING WHEEL 

  14. Install the instrument panel lower trim panel.

    Refer to the appropriate service information

  15. CAUTION:
    • Do not turn the steering wheel with the steering column lower shaft disconnected as damage to the clockspring may occur.
    • Make sure to clean the threads prior to installation.
    • Fixings must be started by hand to avoid damaging threads.
    NOTE:
    • Make sure the component is installed in the noted position.
    • The fixing must be fully tightened immediately following installation. Do not leave the fixing partially installed as adhesive may be activated.
    • Install the lower steering column shaft to the steering gear.
    • Install and tighten the new bolt.

      Renew Part: Lower steering column to steering gear bolts Quantity: 1  .

      Torque  : 30Nm 

  16. Install the engine undershield.

    Refer to: ENGINE UNDERSHIELD - PROJECT 8

  17. Connect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  18. If a new component has been installed, configure that component with the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment.
