Windshield (G1829878): Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jaguar XE and 2019 Jaguar XE. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Wear safety goggles and protective gloves.
CAUTION:
  • Lay the glass on felt covered supports. Do not stand on edge as this can cause chips which subsequently develop into cracks.
  • Protect the surrounding paintwork and body from the movement of the cutting blades.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  1. Remove the cowl panel.

    Refer to: COWL PANEL

  2. NOTE: Repeat this step for the other side. Remove both A-pillar trims.

    Refer to: A-PILLAR TRIM PANEL

  3. Remove the rain sensor.

    Refer to: RAIN SENSOR

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Remove the cover.

    • Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
    • Remove the component.

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Remove the control unit.
  7. NOTE: This step is only applicable to vehicles manufactured between and including 16 and 20 model years.

    Release and remove the 2 components.

    Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.

    Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.

    Secure the 4 heating element leads with adhesive tape.

  11. NOTE:
    • Repeat this step for the other side.
    • If the A pillar trim clips are damaged, install new clips.

    Remove the A pillar trim panel.

  12. NOTE:
    • The graphics in the next 13 steps do not represent this specific vehicle, but the information is always correct.
    • This illustration is used to index the contents of the fiber-lined glass removal special tool.
    • Consult the instruction manual supplied with the fiber-lined glass removal special tool before commencing the removal of the windshield.

    • Make sure that the contents of the fiber-lined glass removal special tool kit are complete and no items are damaged or missing.

      Special Tool(s): JLR-501-176 

    • Make sure that there is enough cutting fiber line to complete the cutting out of the windshield.
    • Instrument Panel protector
    • Cutting fiber threading tool
    • Pick
    • Spider cutting tool
    • Anchor suction tool
    • Cutting fiber install tool
    • Cutting fiber
  13. NOTE:
    • Left Hand Drive (LHD) illustrations shown, Right Hand Drive (RHD) is similar.
    • This step is to be completed from inside the vehicle.

    • Install the instrument panel protector (A)  as illustrated.
    • Install the cutting fiber (G)  into the cutting fiber install tool (F)  as illustrated.
  14. CAUTION: Make sure that extreme care is taken with this step, to avoid damage to the windshield and surrounding areas.
    NOTE:

    Use the cutting fiber install tool to push the cutting fiber through the windshield sealant as illustrated.

    Use the pick to pull the cutting fiber fully through the windshield sealant. The cutting fiber should now be accessible from outside the vehicle.

  16. NOTE:

    • The red marker on the cutting fiber indicates the correct amount of fiber required for the windshield removal.

    Pull the cutting fiber through the windshield until the correct length of fiber is available.

    Use the cutting fiber threader to install the cutting fiber as illustrated.

  18. NOTE:
    • LHD illustrations shown, RHD is similar.
    • Make sure the cutting fiber is following the full perimeter of the windshield as illustrated.

    Use the cutting fiber threader to install the cutting fiber as illustrated.

    • Install the anchor suction cup as illustrated.
    • Secure the cutting fiber onto the anchor suction cup as illustrated.
  20. NOTE:
    • This step is to be completed from inside the vehicle.
    • The red marker on the cutting fiber indicates the correct amount of fiber required for the windshield removal.

    Remove a suitable amount of cutting fiber from the cutting fiber spool.

  21. NOTE:
    • This step is to be completed from inside the vehicle.

    Thread the cutting fiber onto the spider cutting tool, and fill the spider cutting tool spool as illustrated.

  22. NOTE:
    • This step is to be completed from inside the vehicle.
    • LHD illustrations shown, RHD is similar.

    • Install and secure the spider cutting tool as illustrated.
    • Use the instrument panel protector to avoid damage being made to the instrument panel during the windshield removal.
    • Use a suitable drill/driver to operate the spider cutting tool.

      General Equipment: Air/Electric/Rechargeable drill 

    • When the cutting fiber becomes parallel with the spider cutting tool, proceed to the next step.
  23. NOTE:
    • This step is to be completed from inside the vehicle.

    • Install and secure the spider cutting tool as illustrated.
    • Use the instrument panel protector to avoid damage being made to the instrument panel during the windshield removal.
    • Use a suitable drill/driver to operate the spider cutting tool.
    • When the cutting fiber becomes parallel with the spider cutting tool, proceed to the next step.
  24. NOTE:
    • This step is to be completed from inside the vehicle.

    • Repeat the previous step with the spider cutting tool installed in position 1, 2 and 3  until the windshield sealant is fully cut through.
    • Make sure the instrument panel protector is always used to avoid damage to all surrounding areas.
  25. WARNING:
    • This step requires the aid of another technician.
    • Eye protection must be worn.

    With assistance, remove the windshield glass.

    General Equipment: Windscreen removal/installation equipment
