Instrument Panel Cross-Car Beam (G2724703): Removal

WARNING:
  • To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any airbag Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for one minute. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  • Never probe the electrical connectors of airbag modules or any other SRS  component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  • Always wear safety glasses when working on an airbag equipped vehicle and when handling an airbag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury
  • Take extra care when handling SRS  components.
CAUTION:
  • Note the installed position of the component(s) prior to removal.
  • Extra care must be taken to avoid twisting the wiring harness, failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.
  • Extra care must be taken to avoid damage to the wiring harness clips, any damaged clips must be replaced.
  • Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

    Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

  2. CAUTION: Make sure to support the vehicle on axle stands.

    Raise and support the vehicle.

  3. Drain the cooling system.

    Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING AND VACUUM FILLING

  4. Evacuate the Air Conditioning (A/C) system.

    Refer to: AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING

  5. Remove the right secondary bulkhead panel.

  6. Remove the instrument panel console.

  7. CAUTION: Be prepared to catch the escaping coolant.

    • Remove the bolt.
    • Disconnect the 2 heater hoses.

    • Remove the bolt.
    • Release the A/C  pipes.
    • Remove the nut.
  9. NOTE: Repeat the step for the other side.

    • Remove the front treadplate trim panel.
    • Disconnect the electrical connector.

    Release the front door aperture seal.

    • Remove the screw.
    • Remove the hood release lever.
  12. NOTE: Repeat the step for the other side.

    • Remove the screw.
    • Remove the A-pillar lower trim panel.

    Remove the front floor mat.

    • Remove the screw.
    • Remove the floor heater duct.

    Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.

    • Remove the cover.
    • Disconnect the 4 electrical connectors.

    Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.

    Remove the bolt.

    Release the 5 wiring harness clips.

    • Release the 3 wiring harness clips.
    • Remove the bolt.

    Release the wiring harness from the instrument panel cross-car beam.

  22. CAUTION: Take extra care when removing the clips.
    NOTE: Repeat the step for the other side.

    Disconnect and aside the evaporator drain tube.

    • Remove the 3 bolts.
    • Remove the instrument panel cross-car beam lower bracket.
  24. CAUTION: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    • Remove the 4 bolts.
    • With assistance, remove the instrument panel cross-car beam with the climate control housing.
  25. NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

    • Remove the 6 bolts.
    • Remove the instrument panel cross-car beam from the climate control housing.
