Active Sound Design
Active sound design is available on the following powertrains:
- Ingenium I4 2.0L Petrol 300PS
- Ingenium I4 2.0L Petrol 250PS
- Ingenium I4 2.0L Petrol 249PS
- Ingenium I4 2.0L Diesel 240PS
- V6 3.0L S/C Petrol 380PS
Active Sound Design is an enhancement of the vehicle engine sound, reproduced and emitted over the vehicle speaker system.
Audio systems with an external Audio Amplifier Module (AAM) receive an engine speed (Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)) input.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) provides engine speed input for the AAM. The engine speed signal is a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. The engine speed input allows the AAM to provide a digital audio enhancement of the engine sound.
The PCM also outputs signals for:
- Engine torque
- Road speed
- Power mode.
The PCM sends these signals to the Body Control Module/Gateway Module (BCM/GWM) on the FlexRay. The BCM/GWM sends these signals to the Infotainment Master Controller (IMC) on the High Speed (HS) Controller Area (CAN) comfort systems bus. The IMC sends the information to the AAM on the BroadR-Reach® ethernet.
The AAM contains software to operate the enhanced engine sound output.
The AAM uses the signals to provide an enhanced engine sound output through the audio speakers as an overlay to current audio system output.
The enhanced engine sound output over the vehicle speakers is active when the engine is running. It remains active even when the audio volume is at zero or infotainment system is turned off. There is no customer interaction with the system which is always active.
The PCM and the AAM record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) if a fault occurs. The Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment reads the fault information.
A replacement AAM does not have the Active Sound Design software installed. It is necessary to use JLR approved diagnostic equipment to install the software to the replacement AAM.
If the correct software is not installed in the AAM, a loud engine noise may be heard.
