Steering Angle Sensor Module

The Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) is located under the steering column cowl and secured to the rear face of the clockspring with 3 screws. The SASM is connected to the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) via a hardwired connection.

The SASM measures the steering wheel angle and the rate of change of the steering wheel angle. These measurements are transmitted by the SWM to the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) control module. They are also transmitted to other related modules on the High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) chassis systems bus.

A code wheel and 16 optical digital sensors are installed inside the SASM. Rotation of the code wheel is read by the optical digital sensors to produce steering wheel angle, direction of rotation and rotational speed signals. The SASM is able to measure a rotation range of ± 720°. The steering mechanism will only allow the steering wheel to rotate a maximum of ± 540°.

If a fault occurs within the SASM, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set and stored in the SASM. In this situation 'DSC NOT AVAILABLE' will be displayed in the Instrument Cluster (IC) message center and the amber warning indicator will illuminate. The amber warning indicator will illuminate until the fault is rectified.
