Starter Motor Testing - INGENIUM I4 2.0L Petrol (G2878550): Check

CAUTION:

The starter motor spins at a high Revolutions Per Minute (RPM), care must be taken at all times. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
Make sure the Battery Support Unit is in the OFF position during set-up. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

NOTE: The external Direct Current (DC) supply must match the specification of the 12 V battery installed to the vehicle.

Remove the starter motor.
Refer to: STARTER MOTOR
NOTE: If the starter motor is externally coated, make sure to clamp using a non-coated area.

Secure the starter motor in a vice.

Connect the negative Battery Support Unit cable to the starter motor casing. (3)

CAUTION: Make sure the Battery Support Unit is in the OFF position. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

1. Using a suitable cable, connect one end to the motor power terminal of the starter motor (1).
  Torque : 10Nm
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the solenoid power terminal (2).
  Torque : 7Nm

Connect the positive Battery Support Unit cable to the motor power terminal of the starter motor. (1)

CAUTION: The starter motor spins at a high RPM , care must be taken at all times. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

Switch ON the Battery Support Unit for 5 seconds. Observe the results.
1. Following are four possible outcomes of this test, only one will be observed.
2. Starter motor pinion gear comes out and spins/rotates fast and freely at normal speed - Starter Motor OK and can be reused.
3. Pinion gear comes out, but it does not rotate or rotates very slowly - Starter Motor NOT OK and should not be reused.
4. Pinion gear spins fast and freely at normal speed but does not comes out - Starter Motor NOT OK and should not be reused.
5. Pinion gear neither spins and nor comes out, and you may hear only a click sound - Starter Motor NOT OK and should not be reused.
1. Following the test, it is advisable to visually inspect the starter motor for signs of arcing or damage. Do not reuse the starter motor if these are found, even if it passed the bench test.
