Cylinder Compression Test - V8 S/C 5.0L Petrol, Project 8 (G2246618): Check

CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all openings must be sealed.

NOTE:

This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.

Remove the spark plugs.
Refer to: SPARK PLUGS
CAUTION: Make sure the fuel injection system is disabled before completing the cylinder compression test. Failure to follow this step may result in damage to the vehicle.

NOTE: Repeat this step for the other side.

Disconnect the 4 connectors.
Crank the engine for approximately 5 seconds to remove any fuel remaining in the cylinders.
NOTE: Dry cylinder compression test.

Install the compression test gauge.
NOTE:
1. This step requires the aid of another technician.
2. Print graphic number E164747 in step 11 . Use this graphic to record each cylinder compression figure.
3. The startup battery must be in a good condition and fully charged before doing the cylinder compression test.

1. Crank the engine for 10 seconds and record the figure displayed on the compression test gauge. Before removing the compression test gauge, make sure the pressure is released after each cylinder recording.
2. Repeat the process for all cylinders.

Remove the compression test gauge.
NOTE: Wet cylinder compression test.

Using a suitable syringe add 10 ml of clean engine oil into the cylinder as illustrated.

Install the compression test gauge.
NOTE:

2. Print graphic number E164747 in step 11 . Use this graphic to record each cylinder compression figure.

After each wet cylinder compression test remove the compression test gauge and crank the engine for approximately 10 seconds to remove any engine oil remaining in the cylinder.

1. A= dry cylinder compression test.
2. B= wet cylinder compression test.
The minimum cylinder compression reading recorded must be within 10% of the maximum cylinder compression reading recorded. If the difference across the cylinders is higher than 10% please contact dealer technical support (DTS) for further assistance.
Install the spark plugs.

Connect the 4 electrical connectors.
Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, read and clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
General Equipment : Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment
