Pinpoint Test A: Oil Consumption Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jaguar XE and 2019 Jaguar XE. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Oil consumption will vary, depending on a number of factors. New engines will normally use more oil than 'run-in' engines, although a guideline would be to expect 16, 000 Km (10, 000 miles) per liter.
  1. A1: CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION
    1. Start the engine and allow it to run until it reaches normal operating temperature.
    2. Make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and set ignition status to OFF  .
    3. Allow to settle for at least five minutes.
    4. Check the oil level.
    5. Correct the level, if necessary, and record the reading and mileage in the vehicle history.
    6. Make sure that the owner/driver is aware that a test is being completed, and that they should not top-up their oil level for the duration of the test, but should check the level every 160-240 Km (100-150 miles).
    7. When the oil level reaches the Min  mark, the customer should bring the vehicle in to be checked.
    8. Top-up the oil to the level at the beginning of the test and record the amount of oil needed to do so, and the mileage covered in the course of the test.
    9. From this, the consumption can be calculated, and a decision made as to if or not the consumption is considered excessive.

Is the consumption excessive for the mileage and/or use?

    Yes

Disassembly will be required to check the components indicated in the symptom chart.

    No

    No further action is required.

Symptom Chart - Dual mass flywheel

NOTE: Check the transmission fluid level prior to performing any further diagnosis.
SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES ACTION
Clutch slipping
  1. Clutch pedal not returning fully
  2. Clutch controls hydraulic fault - Fluid leak, air ingress
  3. Clutch slave cylinder not returning fully
  4. Clutch friction plate excessively worn
  5. Clutch friction plate overheated
  6. Clutch pressure plate warped/failed
  7. Clutch friction plate contaminated with oil
  1. Check the operation of the clutch pedal
  2. Check the clutch controls for leaks or air ingress
  3. Install a new clutch assembly
  4. Investigate the source of the oil leak. Rectify as necessary. Install a new clutch assembly
Clutch chatter or shudder
  1. Engine/transmission mountings loose/damaged
  2. Clutch friction plate contaminated with oil
  3. Clutch pressure plate warped/failed
  4. Dual mass flywheel failure
  1. Check the integrity of the engine/transmission mountings
  2. Investigate the source of the oil leak. Rectify as necessary. Install a new clutch assembly
  3. Install a new clutch assembly
  4. Install a new dual mass flywheel
Clutch drag (difficulty shifting)
  1. Clutch controls hydraulic fault - Fluid leak, air ingress
  2. Clutch not disengaging completely when the clutch pedal is pressed
  3. Clutch pressure plate warped/failed
  4. Clutch friction plate contaminated with oil
  5. Clutch friction plate not sliding freely on the input shaft splines
  1. Check the clutch controls for leaks or air ingress
  2. Refer to the relevant article of the repair information and check the clutch system
  3. Install a new clutch assembly
  4. Investigate the source of the oil leak. Rectify as necessary. Install a new clutch assembly
  5. Check the clutch friction plate sliding motion on the input shaft splines
Clutch pedal pulsation
  1. Clutch/brake pedal pivot shaft not adequately lubricated
  2. Clutch pressure plate warped/failed
  3. Clutch release bearing worn/failed
  4. Dual mass flywheel failure
  1. Lubricate the clutch/brake pedal pivot shaft
  2. Install a new clutch assembly
  3. Install a new clutch slave cylinder
  4. Install a new dual mass flywheel
