Timing Drive Components (G2244093): Installation

- Install the sprocket.
- Make sure that 2 new friction washers are installed.
Renew Part: Crankshaft sprocket friction washer Quantity: 2 .

- Install the timing chain fixed guides.
- Install and tighten the 6 bolts.
Torque: 12Nm

- Install the special tool to each camshaft.
Special Tool(s): 303-1452
- Install and tighten the 6 special tool bolts.
  Torque: 10Nm

- Carefully rotate the camshafts into the position illustrated.
CAUTION:
- Do not overturn the camshafts.
- Tighten the special tool nuts finger tight. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the components.
NOTE: Repeat this step for both camshafts.

- Install the special tool.
Special Tool(s): 303-1452
- Carefully rotate the camshaft clockwise then anti-clockwise whilst tightening the special tool locking nuts until the camshafts do not rotate anymore.

- Remove the 6 special tool bolts.
- Remove the special tool from each camshaft.
Special Tool(s): 303-1452
CAUTION:
- Do not allow the camshaft to rotate.
- If the variable valve timing units are knocked or dropped then new components must be installed.

Install the timing chain and the 2 variable valve timing units.
NOTE: Install the bolts finger tight at this stage.

Make sure that all the timing chain alignment marks are in the positions as illustrated.
CAUTION:
- If the vehicle is fitted with components shown below in section 1 of the illustration, these must be replaced with components shown below in section (2).
- Do not attempt to install the components shown below in section 1 of the illustration, as damage to the engine may occur.

- Using the illustration, identify which timing chain tensioner and guide is currently fitted to the vehicle.
- Make sure the vehicle is assembled using components shown above in section (2) of the illustration only.

- Install the guide rail.
- Install and tighten the bolt.
  Torque: 25Nm
CAUTION:
- If the vehicle is Installed with components shown above in section 1 of the illustration, these must be replaced with components shown above in section (2).
- Do not attempt to install the components shown above in section 1 of the illustration, as damage to the engine may occur.
- Before installing the timing chain tensioners, use the illustration shown above to identify which timing chain tensioner is currently fitted to the vehicle.
- Make sure the vehicle is assembled using components shown above in section (2) of the illustration only.
- If a new timing chain tensioner is installed, do not deploy the tensioner pin and proceed to the next step.
- If the tensioner to be installed has previously been deployed, make sure the attached illustration is followed to make sure the tensioner is set correctly, failure to do this may result in damage to the engine.
CAUTION: Do not release the timing chain tensioner locking pin at this stage.

- Install the timing chain tensioner.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
  Torque: 12Nm

Apply and maintain tension on the timing chain as illustrated.

Remove the timing chain tensioner pin.

The timing chain tensioner piston should apply tension to the timing chain guide in the position as illustrated.

The timing chain tensioner must maintain tension on the chain guide. If the piston can be pushed back so the chain guide makes contact with the body of the tensioner, the incorrect tensioner has been installed. Repeat the steps 12-17.

- Install the special tool to each camshaft.
  Special Tool(s): 303-1452
- Install and tighten the 6 special tool bolts.
  Torque: 10Nm

The timing chain tensioner piston should apply tension to the timing chain guide in the position as illustrated.

The timing chain tensioner must maintain tension on the chain guide. If the piston can be pushed back so the chain guide contacts with the body of the tensioner, the incorrect tensioner has been installed. Repeat the steps 27-32.

Install the special tool.

- Install the torque wrench to the special tool.
- Set the torque wrench to 35 Nm.
- Make sure that the torque wrench is aligned with the special tool as illustrated in the graphic.
CAUTION: Make sure that the torque wrench and the special tool does not move whilst tightening the variable valve timing bolts.

NOTE: Make sure to tighten the exhaust variable valve timing unit bolts first.

Fully tighten the 6 variable valve timing unit bolts.

Torque: 32Nm

- Install the oil drain pipe.

- Install the torque wrench to the special tool.
- Set the torque wrench to 35 Nm.
- Make sure that the torque wrench is aligned with the special tool as illustrated in the graphic.
CAUTION: Make sure that the torque wrench and the special tool does not move whilst tightening the variable valve timing bolts.

CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

Rotate the engine 2 complete turns clockwise.
CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

- Install the special tool.
  Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1303
- Install and tighten the special tool bolt.
  Torque: 8Nm
CAUTION: If the special tool cannot be installed, the timing chain installation steps must be repeated.

Install the special tool. If the special tool cannot be installed, remove both timing chains and repeat the process from step 3 of the installation until the special tool is installed correctly.
