Left Cylinder Head (G2244073): Removal

NOTE:
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
- Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
- Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: LIFTING .
- Remove the left exhaust manifold.
Refer to: LEFT EXHAUST MANIFOLD .
- Remove the left camshaft.
Refer to: LEFT CAMSHAFT .
- Release the 2 clips.
- Reposition the wiring harness away from the cylinder head.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the front knock sensor.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the rear knock sensor.

WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
Disconnect the coolant hose and reposition away from the cylinder head assembly.

WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Remove the clamp.
- Release the coolant hose from the 2 clips.
- Disconnect the coolant hose and reposition away from the cylinder head assembly.
- Disconnect the coolant cross over pipe electrical connector.
- Remove the cross over pipe coolant temperature sensor.

WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- Remove the coolant cross over pipe assembly.
- Remove and discard the seals.
Remove the bolt and reposition the Air Conditioning (A/C) pipe away from the cylinder head assembly.
Remove the bolt and reposition the fuel pipe away from the cylinder head assembly.

WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping oil.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the oil vacuum recovery pipe as directed in the illustration.
- If a new cylinder head has been installed, then new tappets must also be installed.
- If the cylinder head is being removed without a new component being installed, the tappets must be installed in their original positions.
Use the special tool to remove the cylinder head bolts.
Install the Special Tool(s) : JLR-303-1653
- Using the special tool remove and discard the 10 cylinder head bolts.
Special Tool(s) : 303-1492
- Remove the 3 outer bolts from the cylinder head assembly.
- Using the special tool remove and discard the 10 cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the special tools.
Remove the Special Tool(s) : JLR-303-1653, 303-1492

WARNING:
- Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
- Be prepared to collect escaping oil.
- With the assistance from another technician remove the cylinder head assembly.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
