Front Differential - Oil Leak Detection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jaguar XE and 2019 Jaguar XE. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
SYMPTOM POSSIBLE SOURCES ACTION
Oil leak from underneath the vehicle, or a leak is discovered during routine service
  • Oil leak from a component located above the differential
  • Oil leak from the front left halfshaft oil seal
  • Oil leak from the front right halfshaft O-ring oil seal
  • Oil leak from the front driveshaft pinion oil seal
  • Oil leak from the front differential breather stub
  • Inspect engine compartment components above the front differential for leaks. Rectify as necessary
  • Follow the service instruction below

Service Instruction

NOTE:
  • Be aware that oil leaks from above the differential will cause oil to run down and collect on the differential, for example engine leaks, oil cooler pipe leaks, even fuel leaks.
  • Oil that is evident on the split line of the differential is likely to have come from a leaking oil seal, or oil leak source above the differential. Always check for the source of the leak before condemning the differential.
  1. Using a suitable degreaser, thoroughly clean the differential to make sure all oil contamination is removed from the differential. Make sure there is no residual oil left in bolt holes etc. If necessary, use an air blower to clear and dry the bolt holes.
  2. Complete a 30 minute road test to make sure the differential is at normal operating temperature and the differential oil has sufficiently circulated within the differential.
NOTE: Leak detector spray is available to order on the JLR Electronics Parts Catalogue.
  3. Thoroughly coat the potential leak locations using a suitable leak detection spray.
  4. Inspect the differential for signs of an oil leak. Refer to the images below and check the left halfshaft oil seal, breather stub, driveshaft pinion oil seal and right halfshaft O-ring oil seal locations for leaks. Note the potential leak path from a failed oil seal or leaking breather.
    • Right halfshaft O-ring oil seal - A
    • Breather stub - B
    • Driveshaft pinion oil seal - C
    • Left halfshaft oil seal - D

  5. If an oil seal is diagnosed as failed, refer to the appropriate service information and install a new seal as necessary.
