Electric Motor
The electric motor is a brushless Direct Current (DC) motor. The electronics that convert the DC power supply into phase voltages are contained in the PSCM.
Motor Position Sensors
Motor position is detected by magnetic sensors in the PSCM, adjacent to rotating magnets on the electric motor shaft. From the position of the electric motor, the PSCM can determine the position of the road wheels and the steering angle.
The steering angle sensor signals are processed in the Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) to calculate the steering wheel angle and the steering wheel angle speed. These values, together with signal integrity information, are transmitted on the High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) chassis systems bus to the PACM via the Steering Wheel Module (SWM). After first calibrating with the Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM), the PSCM subsequently uses the motor position sensor inputs for control of the power steering.
