Smart Key And Emergency Mechanical Door Lock

The driver door exterior handle incorporates a mechanical operated door lock that is concealed behind a removable plastic cover. The emergency key barrel allows the door to be mechanically unlocked and locked using the emergency key. The emergency key contained in the smart key. The emergency key must be used in the event that the Central Door Locking (CDL) operation fails, or a vehicle power failure occurs.

If the smart key fails to lock or unlock the vehicle, slide open the side cover of the smart key, remove the emergency key blade and unfold. Insert the key blade into the slot at the base of the door lock cover and gently lever the key blade upwards. Carefully twist the key blade, to lever the cover off the retaining clips. Insert the key blade into the exposed lock and turn to operate the lock.

If the emergency key is used to lock the vehicle:

• All doors are single locked.
• Access to the luggage compartment lid is inhibited via the exterior release switch.
• The alarm is not armed.

If the emergency key is used to unlock the vehicle:

• If the alarm is not armed, all doors are unlocked and access to the luggage compartment lid via the exterior unlock switch is allowed.
• If the alarm is armed, only the driver door unlocks and the alarm is triggered. To deactivate the alarm:
  • Press the unlock button on the smart key, or
  • Press the ignition switch with the smart key inside the vehicle, or
  • Position the smart key against the Immobilizer Antenna Unit (IAU) at the bottom of the lower steering column cowl.
• The vehicle cannot be double locked or the alarm system armed using the emergency key.

Smart Key 

The smart key contains a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), transponder and a battery.

The smart key is identical for all vehicle specifications, but differs in the preset frequency and power that the smart key operates. The smart key for each vehicle specification is identified by a suffix change to the base part number as follows:

Each smart key features a unique identification code that is programmed within the integral transponder. The Radio Frequency (RF) signal produced by the smart key contains the unique identification code and also a rolling code. During vehicle production, the unique identification codes of the valid smart keys are programmed into the Remote Function Actuator (RFA), and the rolling codes are also synchronized with the RFA.

When the smart key is operated, it outputs a related RF signal which has an effective range in excess of 20 m (65.6 ft). When the smart key is operated, the RFA checks the unique identification and rolling code. The RFA will only respond if the RF signal produced is from a valid smart key for the vehicle.

In addition to the lock, unlock and luggage compartment switches for operation of the Central Door Locking (CDL) system, the smart key also has switches for:

Smart Key Battery Replacement

When the battery needs replacing, there is a significant decrease in the effective range and the message 'Smart Key Battery Low' shown on the Instrument Cluster (IC) message center.

To replace the battery within the smart key:

1. Open the side cover of the smart key.
2. Use the emergency key blade to separate the smart key's body.
3. Replace the battery in the smart key.

After the battery replacement refit the parts in reverse order. Make sure that the parts click securely into place.
