All Surface Progress Control
The all surface progress control helps the driver to maneuver the vehicle on slippery and unstable driving surfaces. Such surfaces can be ice, snow, grass, gravel, sand, and mud. The system also helps when pulling away from a standstill, ascending or descending an incline. The all surface progress control operates in either a forward or a reverse direction at low vehicle speeds.
All Surface Progress Control Switch
The all surface progress control switch is located in the floor console. Pressing the switch enables the all surface progress control. The Light Emitting Diode (LED) in the switch illuminates, and a warning indicator also illuminates in the Instrument Cluster (IC).

The set speed of the all surface progress control system is operated by the right steering wheel switchpack.
The system is disabled when the all surface progress control switch is pressed again or if the ignition is switched off for more than 6 hours.
All surface progress control has 2 modes:
- Full function mode
- Descent control mode.
When enabled, the all surface progress control defaults to descent control mode, for example, the system limits the vehicle's speed when descending an incline. This is achieved by the system operating the brakes only. The system holds this speed, unless it detects the use of the accelerator pedal, brake pedal, or the speed control 'SET+' switch on the right steering wheel switchpack.
Full function mode is used for all other maneuvers that require controlled progress over obstacles or through difficult terrain. For example, pulling away on a gradient and maintaining a desired speed. Full function mode controls the vehicle's speed by operating both the brakes and engine torque.
All surface progress control can be activated at any point during the drive cycle, within its active speed range of: 1.8 km/h (1.1 mph) to 30 km/h (18.6 mph).
Full Function Mode
- The Electric Park Brake (EPB) may be released automatically when the driver selects DRIVE (D) or REVERSE (R) and presses the accelerator pedal. This action will override the all surface progress control.
- If the driver applies a gentle brake pressure approximately 0 to 20 bar, the system will reduce the vehicle to the new set speed. If the driver applies the brake with a pressure exceeding the low pressure value, the system overrides the full function mode. At the same time the system reverts to descent control mode.
The feature offers the driver a speed based control where a desired vehicle speed can be set. This allows the vehicle travel at the set speed from the current speed or from stationary. The function operates without any brake pedal or accelerator pedal inputs being required by the driver.
Full function mode is selected manually by pressing the speed control 'SET+' switch when descent control mode is active.
Unlike descent control mode, full function mode is used for all other maneuvers that require the use of all surface progress control. These maneuvers can be for example, while making an ascent, or pulling away on level ground.
Full function mode can be used in Drive (D) and Reverse (R). If full function mode is selected when the vehicle is in either PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N), the function is inhibited. The driver will be informed via a message appearing in the message center of the IC.
Full function mode can be selected when the Electric Park Brake (EPB) is applied. In this case the vehicle cannot pull away automatically until the EPB is manually released by the driver.
Full function mode operating criteria and entry set speed is identical to descent control mode.
Full function mode set speed is modified by the driver as follows:
- Increase the set speed by pressing the speed control 'SET+' switch.
- Decrease the set speed by pressing the speed control 'SET-' switch or by gently applying the brake pedal.
Full function mode can be resumed after a heavy braking maneuver, within a small time frame, by pressing the speed control resume switch.
Several override features are available dependent upon the driver actions, for example, depressing the accelerator or brake pedals, or operating the speed control function switches.
In common with descent mode, full function mode is manually deactivated by pressing the all surface progress control switch.
Descent Control Mode
Descent control mode is primarily used when the vehicle is descending, and is selected by pressing the all surface progress control switch. The system status enters either ACTIVE or STANDBY, determined by the vehicle speed and functions as follows:
- The system will not enter ACTIVE or STANDBY if the vehicle speed is above 80 km/h (50 mph).
- The system enters standby when the vehicle speed is within the selectable speed range: Below 80 km/h (50 mph) but out of the operational range.
- The system becomes active when the vehicle speed is within the operational range: 1.8 km/h (1.1 mph) and 30 km/h (18.6 mph).
The system remains in descent control mode, until it detects the use of the accelerator pedal, brake pedal, or the speed control 'SET+' switch.
The entry set speed of descent control mode value depends on the vehicle speed at the time descent control mode is activated. The set speed will be as follows:
- The set speed is set to maximum value if the vehicle is within the selectable range, but over the operational range. Selectable range means below 80 km/h (50 mph). Operational range is between 1.8 km/h (1.1 mph) and 30 km/h (18.6 mph).
- The current vehicle speed, if the vehicle speed is within the operational range.
- The set speed minimum value if the vehicle is stationary.
The set speed is decreased if the driver operates the speed control 'SET-' switch or gently applies the brake pedal.
Descent control mode can be overridden when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal, increasing the vehicle speed. The system functions as follows:
- The feature remains active if the vehicle speed remains within the operational range: 1.8 km/h (1.1mph) and 30 km/h (18.6 mph). The system reapplies the brakes once the driver's intervention ceases.
- The system enters standby when the vehicle speed is within the selectable speed range: Below 80 km/h (50 mph) but out of the operational range.
- The system switches off if the vehicle speed exceeds the selectable speed range.
The system is manually deactivated by pressing the all surface progress control switch. On deactivation, the system either fades out or switches off immediately, which is determined by whether the system was either in active or in standby respectively.
All surface progress control is automatically deselected if the vehicle speed exceeds the selectable speed range: Above 80 km/h (50 mph).
