SYMPTOM POSSIBLE MESSAGE POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION
Rumbling noise from the rear of the vehicle varying at different vehicle speed and load
  • N/A
  • Rear differential faults
  • Road noise
  • Worn or damaged driveshaft joint(s)
  • Wheel bearing(s)
  • Another component contacting the front or rear drive halfshaft(s)
  • Rear differential checks:
    • Check for metallic debris within the rear differential unit. Refer to the appropriate repair information
    • Refer to: REAR DRIVE AXLE AND DIFFERENTIAL  DIAGNOSTICS FOR DRIVELINE NOISE AND VIBRATION and complete the process
    • Loosen, re-align and re-tighten the rear differential mountings
  • Inspect the condition of the road wheels and tires. Rectify any faults as necessary
  • Rotate the wheels and check for wheel bearing noise or roughness. Rectify any faults as necessary
  • Check for any components or objects making contact with front or rear driveshaft(s)
Running at reduced capability with fault present
  • N/A
  • Water ingress to wiring harness or connectors
  • Reduced differential capability
  • Differential increased tolerances
  • Internal fault
  • Rear differential control module fault
Check for stored DTC  s and refer to the DTC  index. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors for water ingress
Rear differential overheat
  • Rear Axle Overheat
  • Oil level incorrect
  • Oil level incorrect specification
  • Sensor fault
  • Internal fault
Check for stored DTC  s and refer to the DTC  index. Check for correct oil quantity and specifications. Refer to the relevant article of the repair information
Excessive steering effort
  • Rear Axle Fault
  • Sticking or stuck actuator
Check for stored fault codes and refer to DTC  index
