Four Wheel Alignment - Project 8 (G2278772): Activation
- Adjustments must completed on both sides of the vehicle
- Adjustments must be even on both sides of the vehicle.
- A change in camber means a change in toe, therefore camber must always be adjusted first (only where adjustable).
- Only use calibrated equipment recommended by Jaguar Land Rover.
- This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
- This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
- Note the correct geometry values before completing this procedure.
Refer to the appropriate repair information
-
- Check the tie rod ends, suspension joints, wheel bearings and wheels and tires for damage, wear and free play.
- Replace all excessively worn components.
- Roll the vehicle backwards and forwards to settle the steering and suspension.
-
- Position the vehicle on a flat and level surface.
- Release the vehicle parking brake.
- Align the steering wheel to straight ahead.
- Install the recommended wheel alignment equipment.
General Equipment: Four wheel alignment equipment
NOTE: Only complete steps 6 to 10 only if the rear subframe has been removed. Loosen, but do not fully remove the bolts.
Adjust the wheel base. Note the readings from the steering geometry test equipment and adjust the geometry as required.
Adjust the axle set-back. Note the readings from the steering geometry test equipment and adjust the geometry as required.
Adjust the axle lateral off-set. Note the readings from the steering geometry test equipment and adjust the geometry as required.
Tighten the 4 subframe to body bolts to the specified torque.
Torque : 170Nm
- Check the front and rear wheel camber alignment. Note the readings from the steering geometry test equipment and adjust the geometry as required.NOTE: Only complete steps 12 to 22 if the rear wheel camber alignment is required.
- Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable lift.
Refer to: LIFTING
- Remove the rear wheels and tires.
Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE - PROJECT 8
Remove the 2 bolts and position the wiring harness retaining bracket away from the upper control arm.
- Loosen but do not fully remove the rear upper control arm to subframe bolt.
- Remove the rear upper control arm to knuckle bolt.
- Position the upper control arm in the direction illustrated.
-
CAUTION: A maximum of 4 adjustment shims can be fitted per side.NOTE: 1 shim is equal to 0.2 degree of camber adjustment.
- Loosen but do not fully remove the 2 rear camber adjustment bolts.
- Add or remove the adjustment shims as required.
- Tighten the rear camber adjustment bolts.
Torque : 35Nm
-
CAUTION: The suspension arm nuts and bolts must be tightened with the suspension arms in the normal ride position. Failure to follow this instruction may result in premature failure of the bush.
- Reposition the rear upper control arm.
- Install and tighten the upper control arm bolts.
Torque
Stage 1: 60Nm
Stage 2: 120°
-
- Reposition the wiring harness retaining bracket.
- Install and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque : 15Nm
- Install the rear wheels and tires.
Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE - PROJECT 8
- Roll the vehicle backwards and forwards to settle the steering and suspension.
- Check, and if necessary, repeat the rear wheel camber alignment procedure until the correct values are obtained.NOTE: Only complete steps 23 to 29 if the front wheel camber alignment is required.
- Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable lift.
Refer to: LIFTING
- Remove the front wheels and tires.
Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE - PROJECT 8
-
CAUTION: A maximum of 10 adjustment shims can be fitted per side.NOTE: 1 shim is equal to 0.1 degree of camber adjustment.
- Loosen but do not fully remove the 2 front camber adjustment bolts.
- Add or remove the adjustment shims as required.
- Tighten the front camber adjustment bolts.
Torque : 35Nm
- Install the front wheels and tires.
Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE - PROJECT 8
- Roll the vehicle backwards and forwards to settle the steering and suspension.
- Check, and if necessary, repeat the front wheel camber alignment procedure until the correct values are obtained.
Adjust the rear wheel toe alignment. Note the readings from the steering geometry test equipment and adjust the geometry as required.
Torque
Stage 1: 60Nm
Stage 2: 90°
-
CAUTION:
- To prevent damage to the tie rods, use an additional wrench when loosening or tightening the components.
- Do not allow the gaiter to twist.
Adjust the front wheel toe alignment. Note the readings from the steering geometry test equipment and adjust the geometry as required.
Torque : 100Nm
- Check, and if necessary, repeat the wheel alignment procedure until the correct values are obtained.
- Using Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic system, calibrate the steering angle sensor.
