Pinpoint Test B: Road Speed Vibration At High Speed
- B1: VIBRATION THROUGH VEHICLE AT HIGH SPEED NOTE: Local traffic authority speed limits must be adhered to at all times.
- This diagnosis and testing procedure is intended to provide guidance on resolving a road speed related vibration issue.
Is there a vibration through the vehicle between 41-70MPH (65-112KPH)
Yes
GO to B2.
No
Raise a TA with the supporting evidence.
- This diagnosis and testing procedure is intended to provide guidance on resolving a road speed related vibration issue.
- B2: NEUTRAL COAST TEST NOTE: Local traffic authority speed limits must be adhered to at all times.
- Complete a neutral cost test. To complete a neutral cost test on a automatic vehicle, change the gear shift from 'D' (Drive) to 'N' (Neutral). To complete a neutral cost test on a manual vehicle, engage the clutch.
Does the vibration disappear with neutral coast test?
Yes
Complete a engine and transmission settling procedure REFER to: POWERTRAIN MOUNT SETTLING If the vibration through the vehicle is still present between 41-70MPH (65-112KPH), raise a TA with all supporting information.
No
GO to B3.
- Complete a neutral cost test. To complete a neutral cost test on a automatic vehicle, change the gear shift from 'D' (Drive) to 'N' (Neutral). To complete a neutral cost test on a manual vehicle, engage the clutch.
- B3: WHEEL AND TIRE CONDITION
- Complete a check on the wheel and tires.
Are the wheels Tires in serviceable condition?
Yes
GO to B4.
No
Repair the wheels and tires to a serviceable condition GO to PINPOINT TEST A
- Complete a check on the wheel and tires.
- B4: WHEELS AND TIRES BALANCING PROCEDURE CAUTION: Only Jaguar Land Rover approved wheel and tire balancing equipment must be used during this procedure.NOTE:
- If a retailer sub-contracts tire replacement and/or balancing the contractor must be suitably equipped with the JLR approved wheel and tire balancing equipment.
- Until flat-spots are removed, significant vibration/shimmy may be present. A road test is required to make sure temporary tire flat-spots are removed. For longer term flat-spots, a longer road test may be required. The road test should be completed on normal open roads (highway is optimal) to allow the highest speed that speed limits and road/traffic conditions safely allow.
- All road tests must be performed with tire pressures at 29psi/2.0bar/200kPa.
- Complete a wheel and tire assembly balance. Refer to: STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION/SHIMMY WHILE DRIVING
- Remove the vehicles wheels and tires. Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE
- Adjust the tire pressure(s) to recommended (cold) settings.
- Using the JLR approved tire balance equipment, balance the wheel and tire assembly until the residual imbalance dynamic is minimized.
- Target is 0g (zero grams) on each plane; maximum is inner 5g, outer 5g.
- Use the 'bulls-eye' balancing mode to minimize residual imbalance.
NOTE: For all markets except NAS. - The maximum Radial Force Variation (RFV) values should be as follows:
- 60N (6.1kg, 13.5lbf) First Harmonic.
- 100N (10.2kg, 22.5lbf) Peak to Peak.
NOTE: For NAS market only. - The maximum Radial Force Variation (RFV) values should be as follows:
- 70N (7.1kg, 15.7lbf) First Harmonic.
- 110N (11.2kg, 24.7lbf) Peak to Peak.
- If these levels cannot be achieved, perform the following:
- Remove the tire.
- Follow the match mounting procedure as detailed by the wheel balance equipment.
- Mark the high point of the 1st harmonic RFV on the outer (and inner for future reference) sidewall of the tire.
- On vehicles installed with electric power steering: Install the lowest 1st harmonic RFV wheel/tire assemblies to the rear axle. On vehicles installed with hydraulic power steering: Install the lowest 1st harmonic RFV wheel/tire assemblies to the front axle.
- Print out the results of the balance and force variation (before and after), and attach to the repair order.
- Prior to tightening the wheel nuts, the high-point of RFV should be marked and the road wheel and tire assembly installed to the vehicle with the RFV high point at the top.NOTE: Nothing should be used to brace the wheel while tightening the nuts as this can disturb the match mounting.
- Install the vehicles wheels and tires. Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE
- Lower the vehicle.
- Tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque. Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE
- Adjust tire pressures to recommended (cold) settings.
Did the wheels and tires require rectification as per process to get within specification for primary balance and RFV?
Yes
GO to B5.
No
Raise a TA with the supporting evidence.
- B5: RECTIFY THE WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY BALANCE.
- Repeat road test with rectified wheel and tire assembly.
Is the vibration issue still present?
Yes
Raise a TA with the supporting evidence.
No
Confirm issue resolved by rectifying the wheel and tire imbalance. Return vehicle to customer.
- Repeat road test with rectified wheel and tire assembly.
