Front Shock Absorber - Project 8, AWD (G2246500): Removal

NOTE:

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING

  2. Remove the wheel and tire.

    Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE

    • Remove and discard the stabilizer bar link upper nut.
    • Position the stabilizer bar link away from the wheel knuckle assembly.

    Release the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wiring harness and position away from the front shock absorber assembly.

  5. NOTE: If equipped.

    Disconnect the suspension height sensor link.

    Remove the 5 bolts and remove the duct.

  7. CAUTION: Make sure the wheel knuckle is supported. Failure to follow these instructions may result in damage to the vehicle.

    • Using a transmission jack, support the wheel knuckle assembly.

      General Equipment: Transmission jack 

    • Remove the yoke to lower control arm bolt.

    Disconnect the shock absorber electrical connector.

    Remove and discard the 3 shock absorber upper mounting nuts.

    • Remove and discard the upper control arm nut and bolt.
  11. CAUTION: The lower arm ball joint can be damaged by excessive articulation. The wheel knuckle must be fully supported at all times. Do not allow the wheel knuckle to hang on the lower arm. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to vehicle.
    NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    1. Release the upper control arm and position in the direction illustrated.
    2. Position the knuckle assembly as illustrated.
    3. Move the shock absorber assembly downwards.
    4. Remove the shock absorber assembly from the vehicle.
  12. NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

    To aid reassembly, mark the installed position of the components prior to disassembly.

  13. WARNING: Always follow the spring compressor manufacturer's instructions.

    Using a suitable tool, compress the spring and remove the shock absorber nut.

    General Equipment: Suspension Spring Compressor 

  14. NOTE: Note the orientation of the components prior to removal.

    Remove the shock absorber and the upper mounting assembly from the spring.
