ITEM DESCRIPTION
1 High Pressure (HP) Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) charge air temperature sensor
2 HP EGR cooler bypass valve actuator
3 HP EGR cooler bypass valve position sensor
4 HP EGR valve motor
5 HP EGR cooler

On EU6 and North American Specification (NAS) market vehicles the exhaust gases are passed through the High Pressure (HP) Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler before passing to the intake manifold. The HP EGR valve and the HP EGR cooler are located on the left side of the engine. Both components are attached to the intake manifold with bolts.

The HP EGR cooler has a bypass valve. The bypass valve allows the exhaust gases to flow direct to the intake manifold or diverts them through the HP EGR cooler. A HP EGR cooler bypass valve solenoid is located on a bracket at the top of the engine. The HP EGR cooler bypass valve actuator receives a vacuum which is produced by the vacuum pump located at the bottom of the engine.

The vacuum supply to the actuator is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). When bypass control is required, the PCM activates the HP EGR cooler bypass valve solenoid. The HP EGR cooler bypass valve solenoid applies vacuum to the HP EGR cooler bypass valve actuator.

The HP EGR cooler bypass valve position sensor is located in a bracket on the HP EGR cooler. The HP EGR bypass valve position sensor signal is received by the PCM via hardwired connection.

On vehicles, equipped with the HP EGR cooler, an additional charge air temperature sensor is installed in the HP EGR cooler outlet pipe. The sensor is located adjacent to the inlet manifold connection. The sensor receives a reference voltage from the PCM and returns a signal relative to the exhaust gas output from the HP EGR cooler.
