Crankshaft Rear Seal (G1817146): Removal

All vehicles

CAUTION: Failure to follow this step may result in damage to the crankshaft rear oil seal.

The existing special tool JLR-303-1674 must be modified as illustrated before use.

Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674

General Equipment: Flat file
Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT
Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: LIFTING

The following step(s) applies to:

Vehicles with automatic transmission
Remove the drive plate.
Refer to: FLEXPLATE

The following step(s) applies to:

Vehicles with manual transmission
Remove the flywheel.
Refer to: FLYWHEEL

CAUTION:
1. Make sure to align the special tool with the locating dowel.
2. Make sure the protruding depth of the drill bit is double-checked after the tightening of the drill bit.
3. Make sure the hole to be drilled is aligned in between 9 and 3 o'clock positions.

1. Install the spacer to the drill bit and use the notch on the special tool to tighten the drill bit in the correct depth.
  Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1712
  
  General Equipment: Electric drill
2. Install the special tool to the end of the crankshaft.
  Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1712
3. Install and hand-tighten the 3 bolts.
  Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1712
4. Drill through the upper hole of the special tool.
  Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1712
5. Remove the special tool.

1. Position the special tool as illustrated.
  Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1712
2. Install and hand-tighten the screw through the special tool.
3. Install the special tool, and remove the rear crankshaft seal.
