Brake System Bleeding - Project 8 (G2301174): Activation
- Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.
Refer to: LIFTING
- Remove all 4 wheel and tire assemblies.
Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE - PROJECT 8
- Check the brake pipes and hoses are secure and there are no signs of a brake fluid leak. If a brake fluid leak is detected, investigate and rectify the cause of the brake fluid leak, before bleeding the brakes.
Remove the cowl panel left trim panel.
-
WARNING: Do not allow dirt or foreign liquids to enter the brake fluid reservoir. Use only new brake fluid of the correct specification from airtight containers. Do not mix brands of brake fluid as they may not be compatible.CAUTION: The brake fluid reservoir must remain full of clean brake fluid at all times throughout this procedure.
Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap and top up as required.
-
CAUTION: Make sure that the operating pressure of the bleeding apparatus does not exceed 5 bar.
Install the pressure bleeding equipment to the vehicle.
General Equipment: Brake/clutch system pressure bleeder/filler
-
CAUTION: The bleed bottle must remain a minimum of 50 mm above the brake caliper that is being bled.
Install the bleed hose to the brake caliper bleed screw and immerse the free end of the bleed hose in a bleed bottle equipped with a 1 way valve.
-
WARNING:
- For a Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment assisted bleed procedure, proceed to step 9.
- For a manual bleed procedure, proceed to step 15 .
- Connect the JLR approved battery support unit.
- Connect the JLR approved diagnostic equipment to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session.
General Equipment: Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment
- Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
-
- Select 'ECU Diagnostics'
- Select 'Anti-Lock Brake System Control Module [ABS]'
- Select 'ECU
- Functions'
- Select 'Brake Bleed'
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- When the task is completed, exit the current session.
- Disconnect the JLR approved diagnostic equipment and the JLR approved battery support unit.
- Start and run the engine.
-
WARNING: Braking efficiency may be seriously impaired if an incorrect bleed sequence is used.CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.
The illustration shows the correct order in which each brake caliper should be bled.
-
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.NOTE: The following sequence must be completed a minimum of 10 times for the rear brake calipers.
- Remove the bleed screw dust cap.
- Depress the brake pedal at a rate of 3 seconds to apply, release and then wait for 5 seconds.
- Depress the brake pedal, open the bleed screw.
- Close the bleed screw.
- Release the brake pedal.
- Wait 5 seconds.
- Repeat the substeps 1 - 5 as required.
- Remove the bleed screw dust cap.
-
CAUTION:
- Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.
- The front brake calipers have 2 bleed points. The inner bleed point should be bled first.
NOTE: The following sequence must be completed a minimum of 15 times for the front brake calipers.- Remove the bleed screw dust cap.
-
NOTE: Repeat this step for the other side.
- With the brake pedal fully depressed, tighten the rear brake caliper bleed screw.
Torque : 15Nm
- Install the bleed screw dust cap. This will prevent corrosion to the bleed screw.
- With the brake pedal fully depressed, tighten the rear brake caliper bleed screw.
-
NOTE: Repeat this step for the other side.
- With the brake pedal fully depressed, tighten the 2 front brake caliper bleed screws.
Torque : 15Nm
- Install the 2 bleed screw dust caps. This will prevent corrosion to the 2 bleed screws.
- With the brake pedal fully depressed, tighten the 2 front brake caliper bleed screws.
-
WARNING: Braking efficiency may be seriously impaired if an incorrect bleed sequence is used.
If required, repeat the brake bleeding procedure for each brake caliper, following the above sequence.
- Remove the brake bleeding apparatus.
General Equipment: Brake/clutch system pressure bleeder/filler
-
NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.
Apply the brake pedal and check for brake fluid leaks.
Fill the brake fluid reservoir to the 'MAX' mark.
- Install the brake fluid reservoir cap.
- Install all 4 wheel and tire assemblies.
Refer to: WHEEL AND TIRE - PROJECT 8
- Install the cowl panel left trim panel.
