The position of the active exhaust valves are set by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
The position of the active exhaust valves is dependent on:
- Engine speed
- Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor signal
- The selected mode of the active exhaust switch or the drive mode selection on the JaguarDrive Switchpack (JDS).
When the vehicle shuts down, the active exhaust valves remain at the set position. On vehicle start up, 2 operation modes are available.
The operation modes are the following:
- Pressing and holding the Engine start button - The active exhaust valves stay in closed position for a quiet start (regardless of the JaguarDrive Switchpack (JDS) selection).
- Normal press and release on the Engine start button - The active exhaust valves open to enhance the exhaust sound (except in Comfort/ECO drive modes).
When the active exhaust system is activated manually by operating the active exhaust switch, the active exhaust switch notifies the JDS via hardwired connection. The JDS then converts the signal, and sends a message to the Body Control Module/Gateway Module (BCM/GWM) assembly via the High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) chassis systems bus. The BCM/GWM forwards the signal to the PCM via the FlexRay bus.
The PCM sends a control signal which goes through the AEM, to operate the left and right actuators. If the signal state changes, each actuator should move. The movement is monitored by the AEM by measuring the supply current in each circuit between the AEM and the actuators. If the current is too small or occurs at the wrong time, the AEM concludes that the movement is incorrect. The AEM sets the actuators OFF and ON again to reset them. The AEM can therefore recover the valve operation in the case that the actuators are temporarily blocked, or suffer from a Radio Frequency (RF) susceptibility.
