Fuel Tank Draining - Project 8 (G2252195): Draining

WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable vapours are always present and may ignite. Be prepared for fuel spillage at all times and always observe fuel handling precautions. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

CAUTION:

Make sure the workshop area in which the vehicle is being worked on is as clean and as dust free as possible. Foreign matter from work on clutches, brakes or from machining or welding operations can contaminate the fuel system and may result in later malfunction.
Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all components must be sealed.

This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

The following step(s) applies to:

All vehicles

Always follow the fuel system health and safety precautions when doing any repairs to the fuel system.
Refer to: PETROL AND PETROL-ETHANOL FUEL SYSTEMS HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Release the pressure in the fuel system.
Refer to: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE
Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.
Refer to: STARTUP BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT

The following step(s) applies to:

Vehicles without seatbelt retention bar
Remove the second row seat cushion.
Refer to: SECOND ROW SEAT CUSHION - PROJECT 8

Release the 4-point harness from the seatbelt retention bar.

Remove the 4 upper bolts from the seatbelt retention bar.

Remove the 4 lower bolts from the seatbelt retention bar.
CAUTION: Protect the surrounding paintwork to avoid damage.

With assistance, remove the seatbelt retention bar.

Release the 4 clips and remove the trim panel.

Remove the access cover.

Cut the tip off the fuel tank drain port.
NOTE: A fuel vacuum drain unit must be attached to the special tool to achieve full fuel tank drain.

- Connect the fuel tank drain equipment ground cable to the vehicle and install the special tool.
  Special Tool(s): 310-154
- Drain the fuel tank.
General Equipment: Fuel retrieval and storage system
WARNING: Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.

Disconnect the 2 fuel lines.

Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.

Using the special tool remove the locking ring.

Disconnect the 2 fuel pipes and the electrical connector.

- Remove the fuel pump and sender unit.
- Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if damaged or worn.

Recover the remaining fuel from the tank.
