Electrical Load Management: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Jaguar XE and 2019 Jaguar XE. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The Body Control Module/Gateway Module (BCM/GWM) contains the electrical load management. The electrical load management uses the Intelligent Power Management System (IPMS) functionality and is based on Battery Monitoring System (BMS) control module inputs. The BMS software is contained within the BMS control module and communicates with the IPMS on the Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus. The IPMS uses information from the BMS control module in order to determine the condition of the startup battery.

The BCM/GWM will monitor the vehicle system power loads before and during an auto engine stop. Before an auto engine stop, the BCM/GWM will transmit a signal to the system control modules on all Controller Area Network (CAN) buses. The BCM/GWM requests a power save on all electrical loads and sets a minimum electrical value override. The BCM/GWM will inhibit an auto engine stop until the load current is at a value low enough to be supported by the startup battery. If the electrical loads cannot be reduced sufficiently, the BCM/GWM will inhibit the auto engine stop.

When the engine is stopped after an auto engine stop, the BCM/GWM will continue to monitor the startup battery state of charge. If startup battery voltage falls below 11.0V, a level which will result in degraded starting performance, the BCM/GWM will initiate an engine start. The BCM/GWM monitors the components and the status of the auto stop/start system, and can store fault related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
