Transmission Cooling (G1899075): Description
Two hose and pipe assemblies connect the ATF cooler to the automatic transmission. Two engine coolant hose connections are incorporated into the top of the ATF cooler for the supply and return of coolant from the engine cooling system.
GTDi 2.0L Petrol models are not fitted with a thermostatic valve: ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is supplied from the transmission ATF pump into the ATF cooler. After passing through the ATF cooler, the ATF passes out of the ATF cooler and is returned to the transmission fluid pan.
Ingenium I4 2.0L diesel models are fitted with a thermostatic valve: ATF is supplied from the transmission ATF pump, through a thermostatic valve (if open) into the ATF cooler. After passing through the ATF cooler, the ATF passes out of the ATF cooler and is returned, via the thermostatic valve body, to the transmission fluid pan. The thermostatic valve is located in the transmission cooler fluid supply and return lines. The valve contains a thermostatic wax element which is closed when transmission fluid temperatures are below 69°C (156.2°F). At temperatures of 69°C (156.2°F) and above, the thermostatic valve begins to open allowing the fluid to flow through the ATF cooler. The thermostatic valve is fully open at temperatures of 79°C (174.2°F)
